The Chinalco-Rio Tinto Exploration (“CRTX”) company was established in 2011 to explore for copper, coal, potash, iron ore, nickel and borates in the People’s Republic of China. The company is a joint venture between two of the world’s leading minerals and metals producers – Chinalco and Rio Tinto. We aim to operate as a seamless organisation that maximises the benefits of standard and shared approaches for every activity. The Company’s objective is to maximise total shareholder return by sustainably finding, developing, mining and processing natural resources. Our major exploration targets are copper, coal and potash. To assist with growing and developing CRTX’s business in China, we are looking for a Principal Geoscientist to join the CRTX Beijing office, reporting to the Chief Geoscientist.
The successful candidate will join a highly driven team of geoscientists focused on delivering on the CRTX vision of being a world leader in mineral exploration and discovering tier one mineral resources using creativity, integrity and world class technologies. Drawing on technological expertise from a wide variety of environments around world including from Rio Tinto, Chinalco and the market place in general, this role must identify and disseminate technology and expertise effectively across broad and variable environments and jurisdictions. This role will typically be assigned to develop and lead a few projects and/or generative portfolios and is required to disseminate technology and expertise effectively across broad and variable environments and jurisdictions. This role is also a pivotal role in the development and improvement of a safety culture amongst the front line exploration teams and contractors, and compliance to the CRTX Code of Conduct.
Key Responsibilities include (but not limited to):
1. Develop, embed and improve an internationally best practice safety culture amongst the operating teams, contractors and consultants with support from the HSEC Manager and other CRTX leaders.
2. Ensure a complete understanding and compliance to the CRTX Code of Conduct amongst all employees, contractors, consultants and contributing bodies.
3. Implement (and Identify, develop and embed where possible) technical and operational best practice exploration systems and processes to facilitate more effective exploration outcomes
4. Develop and retain a list of preferred capable exploration partners and suppliers to support and execute work programs as required by the CRTX exploration program
5. Contribute to specific specialist areas by developing and enhancing the region’s technical capability and knowledge base and providing technical input and leadership to regional improvement initiatives
6. Bring new opportunities to a region that lead to discovery of an ore body within a defined discipline / commodity
7. Facilitate knowledge and skill transfer between the Geoscience Department and all geoscientists. Recognise training and development needs of team members and implement development plans to build capability.
8. Propose new strategic opportunities and directions to the CRTX Chief Geoscientist to ensure CRTX stay best in class and a partner of choice
To be considered for this role you will have:
1. Leadership and innovation experience in their field of expertise
2. At least 10y experience as a specialist industry consultant in China, or senior roles in provincial exploration team in a resource environment.
3. Significant experience in the discipline/commodity
4. Proven track record in innovation in Exploration
5. Broad range of network contacts within the industry.
