320827 Application Engineer - Corrosion

Sandvik Materials Technology, a world-leading manufacturer of high value-added products in advanced materials, special alloys, metallic and ceramic resistance materials. The position would directly report to SMT China R&D Manager, below please refer to the job description:

Key performance areas:

· Responsible for planning own work within given area of responsibility and within outlined goals and priorities for technical market support for hydraulic and instrumental (H&I) tubes and fertilizer tubes in China.

· Responsible for equipment and training for sample preparation and micro-hardness measurements. To analyze the need for added or improved test methods at the R&D center, China and, if identified, to present this with a plan, including technical specifications, costs and time plan.

· To plan and give training on basic level about H&I and fertilizer tube materials, their testing, properties, applications and material selection.

· To plan and give training to designated people in the sales organization within specific areas, such as specialized within hardness properties or other material behavior, standards and specifications or selected application areas, e.g. urea production.

· To plan and give training and seminars for customers with a content that is requested by national sales managers or GPMs

· To assist the sales people within the Tube organization in China with technical customer questions, e.g. including standards, specifications, materials selection or material questions for required changes of, or upset, process conditions.

· To participate in customer meetings, seminars or conferences to present and discuss technical issues and customer questions.

· To participate in conferences with own papers and presentations.

· To plan, perform, evaluate and report materials analysis within failure analysis, competitor material analysis, for technical claims and, on the behalf of other Sandvik BAs, also for other materials than H&I and fertilizer grades.

· To be responsible for the sample preparation and micro-hardness measurements at R&D China, by planning and securing maintenance, a secure working environment and service, training others in how to use the equipment, minimizing downtime and making sure that necessary consumables are available

· To evaluate the need of tests for H&I and fertilizer products at other SMT R&D facilities, or selected universities or institutes with whom we are cooperating, specify and order such tests with the required information for cost allocation and required time and type of response.

· To duly report hourly cost on the correct cost center or internal order number.

Your profile:

· MSc Materials Engineer or similar , with focus on corrosion, material science or mechanical engineering

· At least 3 years of working experience in an R&D environment in a steel company. with materials focus in marketing or production

· Very good knowledge and experience of SMT’s austenitic, duplex and nickel-base materials for hydraulic and instrumental (H&I) tubing and for fertilizer tubing, their microstructure, corrosion properties and mechanical properties.

· Very good understanding in how to etch samples of H&I and fertilizer grades and use microscopy to identify microstructure features, such as phase composition, precipitates, grain sizes, chemical and mechanical defects.

· Good understanding in how this technique can be used to analyze microstructure, chemical composition (BSE and EDS), typical corrosion or mechanical defects. Able to perform own SEM-analyses and to summarize, make conclusions and report the results.

· Very good understanding of how micro-hardness tests are performed, the difference between different test methods and values (e.g. HV/HRB/HRC) and the regular maintenance and care of hardness test equipment.

· Very good understanding of how samples are cut or sawed out without negative effect on test results, mounted in e.g. polymer molds, the best selection of mold material for different analyses and the grinding and polishing of sample surfaces. Able to take responsibility for the sample preparation laboratory, including daily maintenance, securing the availability of necessary consumables and the training of users.

· Good understanding of wet corrosion types, typically occurring in H&I and fertilizer tube applications; general, pitting, crevice, inter-granular, stress corrosion cracking, under-deposit corrosion, erosion corrosion and how the materials and their microstructure and chemical composition effect corrosion resistance. Experienced in doing failure analyses of (wet-) corroded material.

· Very good understanding of how mechanical properties are influenced by e.g. grain size, chemical inhomogeneity, stresses, surface defects and how these may be effected by production or application parameters. Understands how to specify bending operations for tubes, e.g. depending on tube dimension and required bend radius, including how to specify eventual necessary heat treatment.

· Good understanding of typical applications for H&I and fertilizer tubing, their typical requirements and pitfalls. Very good understanding in how to select material for these applications, based on process descriptions, specifications and customer requirements.

· Good understanding of tube production. Able to correctly analyze defects that stem from specific production operations.

· Basic understanding of welding of fertilizer grades: selection of filler material, welding of dissimilar materials, corrosion and mechanical properties of welds and HAZ.

· Has knowledge about typical competitor grades for the specified applications. Can perform comparative analyses of SMT and competitor grades.

· Able to communicate in English without problems, orally and in writing. Able to write technical reports in English.

· Fluency in Mandarin.

· Good at making presentations, uses excel for calculations, tables and graphs, writes documents in Word.

· Without problem communicates via e-mail and accesses and uses databases.

· Effortlessly seeks information. Easily and without reluctance learns new computerized administrative systems.
