Job description:
TITLE: User Researcher
The Microsoft Hardware User Research team is seeking an impactful user researcher with a track record of providing UX leadership throughout the various phases of the development cycle. In Hardware, we make PC peripherals that enable great PC experiences. We create leading-edge products, run a profitable business, and increase customer value and loyalty for Windows, Office, and other Microsoft products. Our core product lines include the Microsoft mouse, keyboard, webcams, headsets, and related PC products, and we do continual research to explore new opportunities. As a research leader in a small division, you would have visibility and impact across the organization from executive leadership to front-line designers, engineers, and marketing teams.
You will be responsible for planning and implementing user research to identify opportunities to define new value propositions for integrated product experiences incorporating hardware, software and services.
You’ll develop and manage research plans for diverse projects including field studies, technology, concept and prototype evaluations, quantitative studies, and basic research -- so you’ll need to have command of a wide range of user research methods for answering research questions from explorative to evaluative in nature, to inform decisions ranging from product and portfolio decisions to informing platform level or longer term investments. In some cases, you will oversee contingent staff to execute against portions of the research plan you have created.
You need to think strategically, be creative, and be able to communicate a lot of information simply and in an organized way. You’ll need to define new ways of measuring success and will need to answer challenging research questions -- so you’ll need to be detail-oriented and results-driven. Most importantly, you’ll need to be a passionate advocate for our users throughout the development process and demonstrate how this leads to business value.
Qualifications:
- At least 3-5 years of experience in the technology consumer product industry conducting user research.
- Experience with a broad range of research methodologies.
- Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary product teams to drive application of results into products.
- Experience generating research plans, defining and tracking user experience metrics, coordinating work on multiple products/releases and managing the work of additional resources.
- Solid knowledge of the field of human-computer interaction, experimental design, observational and field methods and data analysis is required.
- Strong aptitude for learning new technologies is a must. Strong written and oral communication skills are required.
- Education requirements include either an MA/MS or PhD in human factors, psychology or highly related field, OR a BA/BS in one of the above fields with academic or industry experience.
- Hardware user research experience is desired, but not required for this position.
If you are ready to drive integrated research that influences all aspects of a business, with visibility and impact across the organization, we have a great opportunity for you!
Microsoft is an equal opportunity employer and supports workforce diversity.
