Microsoft IEB (Interactive Entertainment Business) is driving the development of new hardware solutions such as Xbox 360, Kinect and Surface that are bringing new and exciting experiences to the user. The Manufacturing and Supply Chain Quality organization is supporting this objective by providing effective Physical Failure Analysis solutions that improve the customer experience and drive improvements back into the product development process. Additionally, the organization works to deliver continuous quality improvements along the complete supply chain.
This role will perform a variety of activities, ranging from FA strategy development to hands-on materials analysis. The expectations include: performing the analysis needed for ongoing product improvement; developing and implementing a Physical Failure Analysis operating model leveraging internal and external labs; building critical internal FA functions/labs; directing and managing a global network of external Physical Failure Analysis providers; engaging with sub-system vendors to perform FA at the supplier level. This will provide the best performance/cost options for Microsoft and its hardware products and provide actionable information that drives change and improves quality.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Expectations of this role will be focused in two areas. First will be hands-on materials analysis and root cause determination leveraging internal FA labs. Activities may include sample preparation, collecting data using state-of-the-art analytical tools, developing and supporting conclusions and communicating results to stakeholders through written reports and presentations.
Second will include the assessment of external Failure Analysis capabilities and then providing leadership and guidance to these groups in maintaining/improving their capabilities to meet the needs of Microsoft. He/she will be required to interface with the Material organization and strongly interact with the Supplier Quality Engineering function as part of engaging external suppliers/vendors.
The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience working with suppliers and external vendors in a technical capacity. He/She must have demonstrated leadership with a strong emphasis on Material Science in support of Physical Failure Analysis. This will require a sufficient knowledge of failure modes and failure mechanism associated with electronic assemblies. In addition, the ideal candidate has demonstrated the ability to direct the appropriate analytical approach that will result in a clearly defined root cause. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required, with experience in program leadership being highly desirable
Basic Qualifications
- The successful candidate must be organized and be able to work independently with little direct supervision.
- BS/MS in Materials Science or Electronics Engineering is required with 10+ years of related experience in engineering and/or failure analysis functions, or Ph.D. in Materials Science with 5+ years of experience.
- Hands-on experience in sample preparation techniques (cross-section, polishing, etc.) and the use of analytical tools such as SEM/EDX, FTIR, C-SAM, etc.
- Knowledge of computer and electronic systems is a must, with experience in printed circuit board (PCB) assembly process and techniques.
- The successful candidate will be expected to travel occasionally (domestically and internationally).
