ABB (China) Power Products Medium Voltage Technology Center (PPMV CNTC), in close collaboration with varied local and global ABB business areas, is developing the next generation of ABB products. In China, ABB PPMV CNTC, located in Xiamen (Fujian), Beijing, and in Guangdong, employs over 100 R&D Engineers with expertise in power products and automation.

Tasks

1. Perform dielectric and electro-mechanical simulation analyses submitted by the R&D teams; discuss and clarify the requirements with the requester; apply a methodical approach consisting in: input data, pre-processing, solving, post-processing; present and discuss the results, findings and next steps with the requester; validate the results through real testing

2. Become a proficient user of ABB’s Simulation Tools as well as commercial solvers used in the field of dielectric, magnetic and electro-mechanical simulations; program software for special simulation cases, based on a commercial solver; benchmark alternative commercial solvers and identify their pros and cons

3. As part of the R&D Team, propose and design innovative and out-of-the-box solutions to address the technical issues revealed by the performed simulations, within the iterative design/simulation/re-design process

4. As extended member of the R&D project team (requester), propose design changes allowing to enhance: reliability, performance, simplification, innovation, fine-tuning, cost-cutting, etc.; verify the ideas/proposals by the means of simulations and real tests

5. Support project related issues in all ABB business and production in China as well as globally, as recognized expert in the dielectric, magnetic and electro-mechanical fields

6. Write technical reports and articles/papers

7. Develop a network and a cooperation with ABB Companies and ABB Scientific Community in China and abroad as well as with external partners

Requirements

1. PhD in Physics, Mathematics or Electrical Engineering, with track record of use a commercial solver and experience with CAD tools
- or -

2. MSc in Electrical Engineering with min. 5 years of work experience and track record of use of a commercial solver; strong command of Solidworks or ProE (CAD) are a must

3. Preferably with experience in power products or power systems, but not a must

4. Sound knowledge and strong expertise in the below fields:
Dielectric: electrical field strength, potential distribution, streamer inception voltage calculations, partial discharges, breakdown voltage, sparkover evaluations, capacitance evaluations
Electro-mechanical: static and modal analyses, power loss and Lorentz forces due to current flow

5. Scientist mindset willing to developing a sound understanding of ABB’s product portfolio and technologies

6. Attaches a thorough importance to details, such as the quality of the models, the boundary conditions, the assumptions/simplifications and the reliability of the simulation results; has a good ability to make a critical analysis of the results thanks to his/her strong command of the underlying physics and experience

7. Excellent team player; keen in global cooperation and knowledge-sharing within a Scientific Environment

8. Good command of English in both written and oral

9. Good communication and presentation skills

10. Enjoys difficult and complex tasks and challenges, self-motivated to learn new areas

11. Solver programming experience is seen as a plus, but not a must
