Description
The primary objectives of this position are to provide leadership for the implementation of outsourcing and vendor management strategies for R&D activities supported by Consumer R&D, to provide leadership to the development and implementation of internal business processes and to effectively manage key internal and external business partner relationships to support Consumer R&D's success in conducting global R&D activities/projects in the highest quality. The Associate Director will be responsible for providing subject matter expertise around global R&D outsourcing strategy and contracting. This individual will be responsible for establishing prioritization of needs, a high level of delivery and will work closely with Global External R&D management, R&D key stakeholders and other supporting functions within the Global Consumer R&D organization. Serve as a single point of contact between Global External R&D and Global Consumer R&D in Asia/ Europe.
This is a management level position where strong leadership, independent problem solving and decision-making are expected and required. Decisions to be made include, but are not limited to, forecasting of future needs, identification and evaluation of preferred strategic global alliances in support of global R&D franchises to ensure alignment with long-term objectives, input to terms and conditions during contract negotiations that maximizes value and minimizes risk, resolution of performance issues with providers, and implementation of internal processes, procedures and training programs.
The Associate Director will provide regional strategy leadership for Asia/EMEA.
Approximately 20% international and domestic travel may be required.
% of time PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Define key tasks or activities and indicate percentage of time required to perform each task.
30% Collaborate and work with internal global R&D groups and clearly identify the needs for outsourced activities, to include:
a. Involve relevant Q&C group (IS compliance, GMP, GCP) and ensure audit and other activities are performed
b. Ensure the appropriate HCC review is performed prior to contract
c. Ensure that the contract is robust and protective and SLA and Quality Agreements are in place, where applicable.

Find and develop best quality global providers for R&D and provide Relationship Management services, to include:
a. Development of Partnering strategies
b. Provide due diligence and conduct comprehensive provider assessments
c. Perform financial solvency analysis

Negotiate with external global providers to provide maximum value, to include:
a. Conduct competitive bidding and manage the RFI and RFP process
b. Determine Fair Market Value on global R&D services (i.e., clinical studies, analytical testing, etc.)
c. Leverage pharma and MD&D capabilities

Collaborate and maintain oversight with Contract Administrators within the Region to prepare and execute agreements effectively.
Qualifications
1. Minimum of 10 years experience working in a business environment, with a minimum of 5 years experience in R&D sourcing/outsourcing as a user or provider. Understanding of the drug development process, clinical research and development, data management and/or project management as well as financial and legal contract language required. Demonstrated Project Leadership experience required. Ability to prioritize requests, and propose effective cost/customer service alternatives required. Excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills required; must be results-oriented and customer-focused.
2. Certified Outsourcing Professional (COP) or similar certification highly desirable.
3. Demonstrated functional experience and knowledge (e.g., clinical trials, familiar with Health Care Compliance and regulatory issues, etc.)
4. Ability to lead cross-functional and/or cross-affiliate teams strongly preferred.
This candidate will have strong leadership skills with the ability to influence and constructively challenge the project team and business partners to achieve project goals. This candidate should be extremely organized, driven, able to challenge cross-functional teams at all levels, and must be willing and capable of being a change agent.
Demonstrated ability to function independently and act collaboratively in a team environment.
