Areas of responsibility
The design engineer is responsible for design with reference to mandate given by the superior and/or appointed Lead Engineer.
- Effectively to interpret customer demands and technical regulations or specifications. From applicable regulations and specifications to define and establish the Kongsberg Automotive specification of the product.
- To develop and design the product or part from the first idea through the design process and the validation phase until the product is implemented in production.
- To work in accordance with the defined design process and to observe given legislation, directives and concessions which may affect the given area of design.
- To be responsible for developing and establishing layout and packing models, CAD drawings for prototypes and serial production and continuously through the development process to perform tolerance- and FEA studies. To ensure that the products meet all relevant specifications and are designed for assembly under normal serial production conditions.
- In co-operation with test and validation department to ensure that test specifications and methods are correct and correspond to customer’s expectations.
Personal tasks
- To ensure the optimal use of the CAD system used.
- To participate in internal and external meetings in terms of benchmarking activities, design reviews, DFA, QFD, SFP, risk analysis, FMEA, etc.
- To be responsible for ordering test samples for verification & test. To approve and establish prototype declarations to secure that all areas in the specification are met.
- To support superior and Lead Engineer with technical documentation and/or physical samples to illustrate the latest status of the design work.
- To initiate cost-saving activities based on internal and external information to contribute towards increasing the competitiveness within the business area.
Main challenges
The most important challenges of the design engineer are the following ones.
- In co-operation with design team and customers to develop products that take product technology to meet future needs and requirements of customers.
- To be a source of inspiration and support in the design team. To develop and improve design methods to work in a more efficient manner and to reduce time and cost.
- Continuously to seek information about new technical innovations, safety regulations and technical trends within the automotive industry. To report in accordance with normal reporting routines but also to report events and situations for which no reporting routines exist.
- To initiate any corrective actions and make priorities together with superior to meet deadlines of design phases.

Competence profile (ideal)
- Education At university level
- Master of engineering or corresponding education/experience
Experience and skills
- More than five years’ experience of mechanical design processes.
- Well-documented experience of 3D design. At least 3 year’s experience of the automotive industry.
- High degree of personal integrity and confidence.
- Ability to make quick decisions based on experience and analysis as well as advice from other people.
- Ability to get on with other people.
- To master, orally and in writing English.
