ROLE PROFILE
Background:
Ricardo is a leading provider of engineering technology, product innovation, technical solutions and
strategic consulting to the world's automotive, transport, defence and energy industries. We combine
business, product and process strategy with fundamental technical research and the implementation of
large-scale new engineered product development programmes.
As we deliver our diversification strategy to embed our offerings into new market sectors, (e.g.
Government, Passenger Car, High Performance Vehicles & Motorsport, Motorcycles & Personal
Transportation, Commercial Vehicle, Agricultural & Industrial Vehicles, Defence, Rail, Clean Energy &
Power Generation and Marine), we recognise the importance of demonstrating world-class domain and
sector knowledge to ensure that Ricardo offers relevant and high value solutions to our existing and
potential new clients.
The role of the Business Development Manager is to work closely with our Product Groups, Market
Sector and Commercial teams to create and sell a portfolio of powerful engineering services that deliver
superior value to our clients and to our shareholders through using re-usable assets, collaborating with
key Business Partners and leveraging Ricardo's full suite of products & services
This is an incredibly exciting time for Ricardo and this role provides a unique opportunity to be part of a
new team driving commercial transformation.

Essential Key Responsibilities & Experience of Selling Engineering Services.
? Natural ability to develop business relationships with new clients / contacts and internal personnel.
? Identify new business opportunities, develop sales exploitation plans and lead the implementation.
? Highly motivated and high level of resilience to cope with a rapidly changing business environment
and demanding client requirements.
? Proven track record in delivering order intake targets.
? Exceptional technical and commercial communication skills at all levels.
? Well developed presentation skills allowing the individual to generate new business opportunities
through targeted presentations to customers.
? Strong commercial skills including negotiation and awareness of industry cost base

Preferred
Strong technical background and previous project management experience are highly desirable.
? MARKET INTELLIGENCE:
Builds and maintains long term client relationships with focus on senior management and
influencers, & develop insights into market needs, client pain points, and client buying behavior.
? CUSTOMER UNDERSTANDING:
Understands the client's business, including their organisation, financial decision-making process
and business challenges to create and sell solutions that respond to the client's value drivers.
? INDUSTRY EXPERT:
Applies an understanding of the client's industry, including industry trends, industry financial
measurements, and key industry players and competitors to develop and sell solutions that address
client needs.
? MARKET SECTOR:
Leverages cross-product group / market sector knowledge of client, industry, and marketplace
knowledge to assess the market opportunity and recommend business development to support the
global market sector growth strategy.
? COORDINATE & COLLABORATE:
With all market sectors, product groups, commercial and research to develop and sell a portfolio of
high value engineering services.
? BUILD PIPELINE:
Generate and progresses a working list of new opportunities.
? DEVELOP WINNING PROPOSALS:
Performs successful negotiations with support from product groups, commercial and market
sectors.
? ENHANCE AND DEVELOP:
The Ricardo Brand at all times and provides proactive, appropriate and timely support to Marketing.
? ADVANCE:
Promote and champions strong value pricing policies.

? Effective in selling complex engineering projects -driving unique value for clients and incremental
profit.
? Able to build long term relationships with clients at senior level.
? Able to work in a matrix organisation and can team effectively across business units to drive
greater business value.
? Have specific skills within an industry and/or product group domain.
? Track record of qualifying opportunities based on opportunity profile, available resources, assets
and intellectual capital.
? Track record of defining and preparing winning proposals.
? Strong negotiation skills - able to craft win/win solutions.
? Can demonstrate improving the long term viability of the client relationship by identifying ways to
extend client value and ensuring that conditions of satisfaction are achievable and clearly
understood by the delivery team.
? Can manage the application of pricing and packaging expertise to successfully blend order
intake, revenue, total cost of labour, and potential profitability to maximize the value of contracts
to Ricardo and the client.
? Degree / Diploma in engineering or business, or equivalent experience, preferably with an MBA
or equivalent qualification.
? A minimum of five years related market sector experience.
? Experience of a complex project or consultancy environment and with some pedigree in Industrial
/ Automotive businesses.
? Strategic thinker, eager to take initiative, effective at creating, communicating and selling
technically-oriented business solutions in a fast paced environment.
? Proven ability to develop strong customer relationships and profitable revenue streams.
? Professional appearance and approach, comfortable networking at senior levels.
? Team player with open and honest communicative style allied to sound professional ethics and
values.
? Must generate respect and confidence from peers and senior groups, and be credible internally
with highly qualified engineers and technical experts.
? Excellent Communicator (English & Chinese) with strong presentation skills.
? Fluent in English and possibly with a command of local languages.
? Computer Skills: Proficiency with all Microsoft Office, especially Excel, Word and PowerPoint
