Job Description

The Applications Engineer (AE) role is an important position responsible for both pre and post-sales support of Macom physical layer (PHY) devices in China.  Pre-sales tasks include securing design wins with Macom products, delivering technical presentations, demonstrating Macom technology, responding to technical inquiries and helping to define a winning product pitch.  Post-sales tasks include hardware and software design support, lab debug, training, and helping to ensure a smooth ramp to volume production.  The successful individual will have a strong background in semiconductor communication devices, specifically for the optical transceiver market. 

Primary Job Functions

• Regular site visits to existing customers and potential new customers

• Identify new design and product upselling opportunities

• Align customer design requirements with Macom products and technology

• Provide guidance and input for customer proposals

• Give technology demonstrations with Macom evaluation boards and reference designs

• Assist customers with architecture, schematic and layout activities during design

• Assist customers with API software integration

• Provide onsite support to quickly isolate and resolve hardware and software problems during design bring up and debug

• Train customers and distributor AEs on the benefits and features of Macom products

• Be an advocate for Macom products and technology!

Required Skills & Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering

• At least 5 years of experience with optics, PHY devices, Ethernet ICs, including both hardware and software design and/or support

• In depth experience with high-speed optical transceiver design and/or support

• Hands-on experience with electrical and optical lab equipment (DCA, BERT, VOA, Viavi, Ixia, etc.)

• Comfortable with measurement techniques for troubleshooting 25Gb/s, 50Gb/s, 100Gb/s PAM4 and NRZ signals (in both optical and electrical domains)

• Optical and RF component knowledge (EML DML, SiPh, TIA, PD)

• Excellent problem solving and debug skills

• Excellent verbal and written communication (must be fluent in both English and Chinese)

• Self-motivated with ability to multi-task and work independently

Desirable Skills

• High-speed mixed signal knowledge (PLL, CDR, FIR, CTLE, ADC/DAC, FFE, DFE)

• PCB experience (design, schematics, layout, signal integrity, component selection)

• Peripheral design experience (power distribution/filtering, clocking, microprocessors)

• Familiarity with the following software: Python, C, C++, Jupyter, Pads PCB, Cadence Allegro
