Description:

• This product focused position performsestablished technical tasks at the sub-system and/or component level forcurrent and future products within a given business unit or corporate area.This involves work across many steps in the product life cycle. Because of theproduct centered nature of this position, they are very often a central pointof coordination and decision making between product line engineers, customerteams, systems engineers, purchasing, suppliers and manufacturing.

• Investigates product problems,understands causal mechanisms, recommends appropriate action, owns problemresolution and documents results with guidance from more experienced teammembers.

• Main focus will include working inbusiness processes of Product Preceding Technology (PPT), Value PackageIntroduction (VPI) or Current Product Support (CPS) and executing technicalprocesses such as Engineering Standard Work (ESW), iDFMEA, Failure IncidentReview Group (FIRG) while using tools such as 7-step problem solving, designreview checklist and other specialized tools required to support the processesand enable high quality decision making.

• Obtains input from stakeholders such astechnical managers, project leaders, other product and manufacturing engineersand supplier partners to deliver information and recommendations that lead toquality product decisions.

• Applies academic knowledge and existingexperience to take action and make decisions that progress projects forwardwithout sacrificing project quality expectations. Examples of these decisionsinclude day to day project details, analysis or test work instruction details,coordination across discipline areas that are necessary to make qualityprogress.

• Owns problem resolution for moderatelycomplex components, products, systems, subsystems or services with a greaterdegree of technical complexity and ambiguity over the entry level engineerlevel and with greater accountability to the project team.

• Provides independent execution ofestablished work processes and systems, while still developing technology orproduct knowledge; engages with the improvement of systems and processes.

• Involves minimal direct management ofpeople, but could involve the coordination and direction of work amongsttechnicians and/or temporary student employees.

• Contributes effectively toward teamgoals, exhibits influence within a work group and continues to developproficiency in the competency areas critical to success in the role.

Qualification & Experience:

• Product Problem Solving - Solves product problemsusing a process that protects the customer; determines the assignable cause;implements robust, data-based solutions; and identifies the systemic rootcauses and recommended actions to prevent problem reoccurrence.

• Product Verification and Validation Management -Coordinates the development of design verification and system validation plansfrom a variety of inputs to identify failure modes while managing risk andrelative priority; evaluates analytical and experimental test results followingengineering principles to verify that products meet internal technicalrequirements and to validate that design solutions meet customer needs;produces recommendations with technical documentation to support productdecisions.

• Product Failure Mode Avoidance - Mitigatespotential product failure modes, by identifying interfaces, functions,functional requirements, interactions, control factors, noise factors, andprioritized potential failure modes and potential failure causes for the systemof interest to effectively and efficiently improve the reliability of Cummins’products.

• Product Development Execution, Monitoring andControl - Plans, schedules, coordinates and executes the activities involved indeveloping a product to a respectively aligned hierarchy of requirements andtechnical profiles; monitors and communicates across functional boundaries tomeet project resource and quality expectations; ensures product capabilitymeets or exceeds expectations and takes mitigating actions when project risksare higher than expected; understands the full product life cycle process andstakeholders.

• Technical Documentation - Documents informationbased on knowledge gained as part of technical function activities;communicates to stakeholders with the goal of enabling improved technicalproductivity and effective knowledge transfer to others who were not originallypart of the initial learning.

• System Capability Engineering - Identifies systemcapability and risks through analysis or experimental testing of the system,sub-system, or super system in the context of its environment; negotiates andverifies requirements against capability to guide project scope and systemdevelopment accordingly; assesses legacy system versus proposed new systemsolution capabilities and makes decisions as to how best to achieve systemcapability with consideration of stakeholder trade-offs.

• Cross-Functional Design Integration - Translatesthe value package requirements that include the voices of many stakeholdersinto virtual designs, and communicates the capability of the design through anapproved cross-functional design review.

• Technical Documentation - Documents informationbased on knowledge gained as part of technical function activities;communicates to stakeholders with the goal of enabling improved technicalproductivity and effective knowledge transfer to others who were not originallypart of the initial learning.

Education,Licenses, Certifications

• College, university, or equivalent Bachelor'sdegree in Engineering or other relevant technical disciplines is required.
