The Group: 

The Morningstar Investment Management group consists of our investment advice, consulting, retirement-solutions, and index businesses. Through our registered investment advisor subsidiaries, we use our expertise in asset allocation, manager research, and portfolio construction to create innovative investment solutions for institutions, advisors, and their clients. The Automated Portfolio Solutions team supports Morningstar Investment Management's managed accounts and advice service by acting in a fiduciary capacity; IFE, 3(28), 3(21), on the fund-level portfolios the team builds and monitors. APS team members utilize proprietary fund selection and portfolio optimization software, research and apply modifications to investments' statistics and style characteristics as needed and refine fund allocations relative to portfolio targets based on the analyst's or PM's quantitative analysis. We work closely with other members of the Research team and Advice Methodology group to implement new techniques to ensure prudent, well-diversified fund portfolios.

The Role:

As an Analyst you will focus on problem solving and continue learning activities. You are responsible for completing all daily review work (primary) and refinement of assigned retirement plans, and you will assist in daily Review 2 (secondary) refinement work.  You will lead small projects as assigned. You will research funds and provide opinion on treatment in internal use system.

In the Analyst role you will need intermediate level knowledge in the financial instruments, asset allocation, modern portfolio theory, CAPM, Capital Market Assumptions creation, including a solid understanding of return base style analyst and holding base style analyst, Morningstar Direct and .com. You will have good intra-team communication skills and begin communication with clients directly on standard review work. You will proactively provide effective and influential ideas/suggestions for process improvements and research projects. Must be able to identify possible causes of problems and propose solutions.

This role is based in Shenzhen, China.

Responsibilities

• Obtain and analyze data to determine client solutions including, but not limited to, portfolio construction, determining model portfolios, performing manager/fund selection, performing due diligence (both quantitative and qualitative), and recommending solutions and/or changes to client products, services, and deliverables.
• Prepare reports and articulate end deliverables and solutions to peers and the client.
• Demonstrate interest in learning about theoretical and practical implications of the consulting process and client needs.
• Support and partner with Senior Consultants and Consultants in client work relating to portfolio construction, manager selection, due diligence, and other client-related needs.
• Assist the other team members on customized research newsletters for clients (monthly and quarterly) for clients, covering various segments like equities, fixed income, and the overall market.
• Complete other tasks as assigned.

Requirements

• 2 years of investment experience with emphasis on mutual fund research / analysis and asset allocation.
• A BS degree in Finance or related field. MBA and/or CFA designation will be a plus.
• Excellent writing and communication skills both in Chinese and English.
• Advanced knowledge of the fund management industry in China.
• Basic knowledge of SQL, Micro (VBA) or Regular Expression will be preferable
• Knowledge of quantitative research will be a plus.
• Good time management skills, and a knack for number crunching and problem solving
