GENERAL PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

· Schedule and coordinate activities involved in discovery studies. To assist with the tracking and monitoring of labor and related expenses for projects in assigned functional area and recommend changes to management and scientific leadership to ensure optimal project scheduling, and financial performance. Perform technical procedures in various areas. Monitor animal health and welfare in compliance with the Animal Health and Welfare Act and help maintain facilities for AAALAC compliance.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

· Collect, document, and manage/evaluate pertinent data including animal observations, test material administration, and clinical sample collection in compliance with appropriate study designs, SOPs, and regulatory agency guidelines.

· Understand and interpret a complex protocol for pertinent requirements.

· May be responsible for independently carrying out technical phases of complex discovery studies, including study management, data organization, QA audit response, internal and external client communication skills, and quality check procedures.

· Utilize computer software for forms, procedure generation, and complex data summaries.

· Independently performs statistical analyses of data.

· Train and instruct new or less experienced staff.

· Development and writing of new procedures and associated SOPs.

· Monitors recently developed procedures and refines as needed.

· Create metrics and assist manager with annual metric review.

· Perform edit and scheduling functions using relevant computer software.

· Prepare costings, staff plans, and scheduling activities.

· Communicate and interact with other departments and individuals (study directors, managers and supervisors).

· Assist in client visits, tours, debriefings, and study initiations.

· Identifies and take appropriate action with problems, potential problems with study designs or protocols, SOPs , and schedules.

· Able to adapt techniques to new procedures or particular needs as directed.

· Effectively schedules multiple assignments.

· May assume supervisory responsibility during the absence of the supervisor.

· Assist with the development of new technical capabilities for Covance Discovery Services and assist with the training of the technical personnel after the development of the technology.

· Review and submit study design or protocol, and associated costing comments, so that financial objectives are met.

· Report all animal care concerns and become involved in the appropriate corrective action, when necessary.

· Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/REQUIRED LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:

· Bachelor degree in Life Sciences, Associate degree in Laboratory Animal Technology, or Associate degree in Veterinary Technology. Requires 6 years of combined scientific, lab animal technician, and post high school education. Client contact experience is preferred. Experience may be substituted for education requirements.

· Must be able to work in a laboratory setting with laboratory animals.

· Ability to read, record, and communicate information.

· Ability to effectively interact with laboratory staff and clients.

· Skilled in concise writing and basic computer operations.

· AALAS certification at Laboratory Animal Technologist level desirable.

SPECIAL FACTORS:

· Overtime work as required.

· Mandatory immunizations and screening as required.

· May work with potentially hazardous substances not limited to known /potential teratogens or carcinogens and/or radiolabled test materials.

· Work may require PPE (personal protective equipment).
