Responsibilities:

The primary function of the Shell Albian Process Engineering team is the provision of process engineering leadership and support to the Shell Albian Oilsands site. Our collective goal is to ensure that the site safely delivers or exceeds its production plan and commitments to reduce river water,land and CO2 impacts. Maintaining a continuous improvement mindset,particularly in the areas of bitumen recovery,production,energy and environmental performance, and asset reliability, is our key enabler.

This role will provide oversight and technical mentoring capacity for the mass balance and reconciliation activities performed within the Mass Balance group,within the process engineering team. In this capacity, this position also provides significant input to and engagement opportunity with the Regulators regarding the Albian site performance, bitumen reconciliation and allocation methodologies.

The role will have very significant site interaction with colleagues in both mine and process technical and instrumentation areas, plant and mine operational areas, business production planning groups as well as Calgary regulatory affairs and Projects & Technology groups.

This position is an excellent leadership and development opportunity for process engineers seeking exposure to Heavy Oil,one of Shell’s key areas of growth globally. This role specifically provides a significant exposure to the overall Albian operations, business, and regulatory environment environments including 3rd party engagement. As such, it is an invaluable stepping stone into other roles at the heart of the Albian business.

Position Dimensions: 0-2 Indirect Staff/consultant supervision.

Principal accountabilities include:

· Responsible to provide support for the successful and timely conclusion of monthly,annual,and ad-hoc reconciliation reporting requirements internal to Shell or required for external regulatory engagement.

· Maintenance and continuous improvement of Shell Albian mass balance reconciliation processes and monthly output.

· Identify and drive improvements in the reconciliation process and Bilmat model to accommodate changes in underlying Albian processes,instrumentation & measurement errors,and evolution in mine-plant balance improvements.

· Responsible for development and technical assurance of Albian reconciliation and bitumen allocation methodologies,and the demonstration of such reconciliation processes and results occasionally to the various regulatory bodies

· Help identify and support a strategy for continuous improvement in the Albian mass balance mass balance tools,processes and procedures,instrumentation & sampling capability,documentation,and personnel development.

· Frequently provide front end process engineering input to site-originating projects

Requirements:

· Bachelor of Science in Chemical, Mining, or Hydrocarbon and Mineral Processing Engineering

· Previous experience in process operating environments, with preference to oilsands operations.

· 4-10 years process engineering experience

· Working experience in operational mass balance and data reconciliation role that might ideally include regulatory or external reporting experience.

· Individual must be comfortable working in a multitask environment that includes the deadlines of a monthly reporting cycle.

· Must be able to work well with operations personnel in order to achieve objectives

Job Performance Competencies:

· Sound understanding of statistics and the mathematics of data reconciliation processes of a complex operating environment.

· Sound understanding of the challenges of plant instrumentation, sampling, and sample analysis techniques particularly in an oilsands environment.

· Skill or knowledge in the application of data reconciliation and mass balance tools, with preference to the use of Bilmat for oilsands bitumen reconciliation. This includes ability to support changes to model structure, error representations, and overall

· Skilled at performing diagnosis and analysis of mass balance results, particularly on the identification of instrumentation and sampling implications in mass balance input.

· Skill to support updates to bitumen allocation methodologies and the occasional demonstration of Albian processes and reconciliation results to external regulators. This entails strong knowledge of statistics and underlying mathematics of data reconciliation.

· Ability to understand an overall plant system from a big picture perspective, with the ability to understand how localized challenges in instrumentation or sampling can impact overall results.

· Knowledge or skill in coordinating and driving the new mass balance initiatives

· Awareness of Oil Sands Mining practices

· Skilled at working effectively with multidiscipline teams to deliver results, including ability to coach and mentor junior colleagues.
