Job Title: Principal SDE - Machining
Department: Purchasing SDE
Reporting Line:
Reports to: Position Title: SDE Manager – Braking



Overall Purpose of Job
This should be a broad overview of this position’s function. Include the overall scope of the position and the authority this position possesses in terms of programs/ projects/ operations and establishing policy.

? The Principal SDE is considered a technical leadership position covering the China Product Lines suppliers for the development of key, targeted suppliers pre- and/or post-Company SOP in support of Asia Pacific, NA and/or EU major new product programs.
? Specifically, the Principal SDE is a subject-matter expert for quality systems, SDE tools / methodologies, continuous improvement / statistical tools, lean manufacturing strategies and manufacturing commodity specific experience that leads the development of key, strategic new (current) suppliers for Company in China. Engagement begins at the supplier integration process (DV – prototypes) for early sourcing needs through to Company SOP+.
? He/she leverages suppliers from the senior leadership to the shopfloor personnel in the effective attainment of automotive safety-critical quality performance levels to assure total cost-savings are realized from effective localization in the AP supply base, i.e. no Company cost of poor quality or loss of delivery performance.

Position Main Responsibilities and Major Continuing goals:
? Think / Act Strategically – Uses analytical smarts along with creative thinking for supplier development plans to prevent problems and as needed to solve problems. He/she sees the big picture in understanding and considering customers requirements, Company business needs and supplier situations when making plans / decisions.
? Builds Organizational Capability – Has the ability to assess supplier needs / weaknesses not only for targeted suppliers, but also individual SDEs to leverage their learning curves along side the suppliers’. Raises the supplier’s performance bar by creating, promoting and sustaining a performance culture.
? Get Results - Delivers on-time, on-quality performance at every stage from prototype samples to OTS samples through the APQP phases by the completion of a comprehensive supplier development approach customized for each supplier’s deficiencies followed by effective deployment of the “plan”.
? Subject-Matter Expert – Considered a lead on multiple fronts (Quality, Commodity, CI…) with the ability to quickly gain and/or effective utilize tools / methods in getting results through people at suppliers.
? Management Support – Coordinates SDE-China Product Line initiatives as assigned including stepping in as the temporary lead for SDE Manager as required.
? Other Key Responsibilities –
? Support systemic improvement, development/advancement of procedures and achievement of company goals and objectives.
? This position will require frequent visits to assigned supplier locations.
? Assist in drafting procedures and work instructions for the China SDE product line.
? Participate in Quality, Company Staff and Product Line meetings as requested; representing SDE department.


Key Competencies:
? Technical Skills / Knowledge / Hands-On Experience
- A full, working tool-kit of continuous improvement to operational excellence tools that can set the vision and lead the next-level change required at targeted China suppliers.
- Demonstrated results through hands-on experience from the shop floor to the boardroom.
- Able to take difficult problems and boil-it down to the key, right steps to take for resolution.

? People Skills
- The ability to influence others in doing what at first may seem unnatural or out of their comfort zone as the status quo appears to be okay. Must be able to demonstrate the value-add proposition in terms of financial gain.

? Manufacturing Process Experience.
- Demonstrated knowledge of key manufacturing process from steel to plastics to machining to assembly and a track record of process improvements.

? Knowledge/ Experience with the following Quality disciplines:
- ISO9001 / TS16949 / VDA6.3.
- 8D/CAR problem solving techniques/other such formal problem solving techniques
- Basic quality technical background including SPC, DOE, Mistake Proofing, PPAP and FMEA development
- Quality Auditing skills and experience
- Advanced Quality Planning skills (APQP)
- Dual Launch Netting and launch execution processes (run-to-rate, mass production trials, etc.)
- Program management knowledge.

? Excellent Communication Skills
- Efficient PC computer skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, etc.)
- Very good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability/skills to be an effective team member
- Demonstrated presentation skills

? Good Leadership / Motivation Skills
- Ability to achieve continuous improvement from supplier/internal Company
- Ability to orientate and train new employees
- Able to prioritize strategic/tactical initiatives and balance with available group resources
- Capability to lead cross functional multi-disciplined teams
Education:
? Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical / Industrial Engineering, required.
? MBA or relevant post-graduate studies preferred.
? Demonstrated Six Sigma BB certification and effective usage

Language: Native Chinese speaking with excellent writing and spoken English.

Experience:
? Minimum 8+ years experience from an industrial environment, in a technical engineering manufacturing role in an automotive-related supplier / OEM.
? Previous group-leader / supervision/ management experience desirable.
? Quality management experience is preferred.
