TechConsult Shanghai was founded in July 2018 to support Carcoustics on its growth path. Prior to the official opening of TechConsult Shanghai on August 14, 2018, "only" TechConsult Leverkusen was available. The distance between China and Europe - 8,000 km and six to seven hours time difference - made the support of our colleagues in Langfang and the quick response to their demands in the past very difficult.
With the opening of TechConsult Shanghai, we will be able to respond much faster to requests from our customer and our Langfang Technical Unit as well as the Langfang and Shenyang plants. Shanghai was chosen as the location because it is the economic center of China and all important regions of China are quickly and conveniently accessible. In addition, most OEMs have a nearby office, either in production, headquarters, development or design center.


TechConsult Shanghai consists of the two departments Materials / Laboratory and Acoustics / Thermodynamics and also includes Material and Acoustics / Thermodynamics Testing. Currently, the team consists of four people - Head of TechConsult Shanghai / Materials Expert, Acoustics Engineer, Testing Engineer and TSM, which is functionally linked to the Langfang Technology Unit but works in TechConsult Shanghai to be close to customers. In TechConsult, which currently covers 300 m2, we have equipment that has to be developed and tested for both raw materials and finished parts. These include, for example, climatic chambers and furnaces, IR spectroscopy, universal testing machine, devices for fire testing, acoustic camera, alpha cabin, impedance tube, thermal imaging camera and more. There is also a multifunctional area where we can not only prepare our samples and welcome visitors, but also perform car benchmarking, as we did at the opening ceremony. For the future expansion and growth is planned, both in terms of headcount and area, e.g. in 2019 we will also have a large semianechoic room for acoustic vehicle surveying.


The tasks of TechConsult Shanghai are similar to those of TechConsult Leverkusen, but concentrate on Asia. This means
- We support our Langfang Technology Department in developing new solutions and improving existing products, selecting the right material and technology to find the best possible solution for the customer and the car body.
- We work in cross-departmental teams on innovation projects, continuous improvement and 5% savings targets.
- We perform all material and part testing at the physical, chemical, acoustic and thermodynamic levels required to produce PPAP documents, develop raw materials or respond to customer complaints.
- We are responsible for creating material specifications with Chinese suppliers and passing on material data sheets to our colleagues and customers.
- We are responsible for IMDS and CAMDS with our Chinese customers.
- We are part of the supplier development team and support the purchasing and quality departments in finding and developing new suppliers and raw materials.
- We monitor the market by participating in conferences, exhibitions and fairs to keep abreast of new developments in the market.
- We support our sales and technical sales department at the customer to talk to our customers about better solutions and increase the car body business and market share.
- We offer training such as Basic Training to familiarize our new colleagues with the Carcoustics process, materials and basic knowledge of acoustics and thermodynamics.
- In cooperation with our European colleagues and the Business Unit China, we benchmark local C-OEM vehicles.
- Together with our colleagues from technical sales, product development and prototype construction, we develop current and future vehicle models for our customers (to our department or at the customer's site) in order to improve the NVH and thermodynamic properties of the entire vehicle with our innovative body solutions and products.？

For all these tasks, we use the same test equipment as TechConsult Leverkusen and the future North American TechConsult to exchange results easily and work very closely together. And although we are quite small compared to the TechConsult departments at our headquarters in Leverkusen, we are well equipped with testing facilities. We work very closely with the central laboratory and the Leverkusen Acosutics and Thermodynamics department, as well as with external laboratories and third-party resources, for all tests that cannot be performed ourselves.？
