Description

Building Material Application Development Engineer provides technical leadership and direction to the Product Business Team. Develop / introduce new systems and applications, safely improve system and application costs, quality, capacity, system and application design, system customer fitness for use and service. It is the primary technical communications link between the Business Team, the customer, the sales force, internal technical resources and the manufacturing plants.

His role interacts with key players in the market to translate customer needs and identify opportunities to grow the use of OC building materials. The Application Development Engineer works closely with Manufacturing, Science and Technology, Sourcing, and Marketing organizations internally and builds relationships with design institutes, universities and other organizations/labs in the market.  Additionally, the incumbent will be expected to partner with other players in building materials industry on innovative programs.

 

The successful candidate must be capable of understanding HVAC Engineering, Thermal power, Mechanical, Polymer Science, Organic chemical and Building Materials. Relevant application knowledge and good experience with Building, Insulation materials and Building Design institute Industry are needed. 

 

This position will be located at Owens Corning Science & Technology Center, Asia Pacific, in Hangzhou. 

 

The position reports to the BM S&T Leader.

 

 

Responsibilities

 

  1. Demonstrates a commitment to safety

  • Participates in regular safety meetings

  • Ensures rigorous compliance to standard safety procedures and OC corporate policies.

  • Zero accidents / RIR on projects

  • Complete safety action plan

     

    2. Understand and satisfy building industry needs

  • Continuously build knowledge of key market segment, insulation, urban heat supply system, etc.

  • Document and communicate customer specifications and Fitness for Use criteria with input and direction from the Market Development Manager, Product Manager and Sales team.

  • Clearly define customer’s needs and expectations, maintain CFFUs (Customer Fitness For Use), CPCs (critical system and application characteristics)

  • Track competitors’ and OC’s systems and applications, monitor marketing and technology changes, develop application-specific technical SWOT analysis to project team for decision-making.

  • Improve application quality to continue meet our customer’s expectations while improving application and product costs

 

Metrics

  • Number of new product ideas that enter the Stage Gate process

  • Revenue from new products

  • Frequency and quality of customer visits/interactions

  1.  Promote existing products to building industry

  • Understand customers fitness for use related to specifications, procedures, and products and partner with the international team of product development experts to build solutions

  • Understand competitive threats through active collection and analysis of competitive products

  • Drive application development based on a strong understanding of local trends

  • Implement appropriate testing/standards to meet quality and consistency requirements of our customers

  • Work with Product Stewardship team to identify and address issues

  • Work with sales & marketing organizations to execute marketing strategies

  • Ensure sales teams’ needs for sales support material and training are met.

    4. Execute project leadership on programs

  • Lead projects from concept through to commercialization, for large cross-functional teams, and ensuring consistent alignment with the business strategy throughout the project.  Projects to be managed through the use of the Solution Development Stage Gate process.

  • Provide innovative solutions and solve problems through engineering and scientific fundamentals.

  • Demonstrate the ability to develop and meet key milestones, to work and communicate effectively with people at all levels within the organization, and to technically lead the development of solutions.

     

    Metrics

  • On-time and on-budget project delivery

  • Implementation of all project deliverables in alignment with customer and business requirements and any approved scope changes

     

     

Job Requirements

 

Experience and Skills

  • PhD or MS degree in HVAC Engineering, Thermal power, Mechanical, Polymer Science, Organic Chemical. Building Materials is preferred

  • Bachelor degree with extensive experience in industry is considerable

  • Knowledge and experience with construction and building industry  is a must

  • Training & practice on building materials is a must

  • Understanding of building or urban heat supply design, building thermal insulation, polymer materials is a plus

  • Experience in rubber foam is preferred

  • Must be able to establish good contacts with key players in the industry.

  • Must know who is who within the industry, good knowledge of building materials, industry trends/drivers.

  • Leading and implementing application development with target customers.

  • Work with internal and external testing organizations.

  • Close working relationship with Marketing and New Business Development Leaders.

  • Travel Requirements: 25-50% primarily for customer visits
