The Merchandise Manager (MM) is responsible for managing the business for a sub-category, this includes but is not limited to sourcing development, vendor orders and internal & external relationships. Reporting to the Divisional Merchandise Manager, the MM leads and develops a team of Merchandisers to drive competitive advantage and cost savings for Gap Inc.
Job Responsibilities:
1. Sourcing Implementation
- Manage the vendor portfolio by proposing rational vendor shift and vendor matrix;
- Identify and prioritize new sourcing opportunities including plan to execute;
- Monitor and report on vendor performance, provide recommendations for improvement and ensure the follow up;
- Create seasonal business report and provide related recommendations;
- Deliver regular market insight report including information on macro/micro situation, competitor activities and new developments.
2. Business Development (include costing insurance)
- Provide input on market fashion/purchasing/technical trend and quality;
- Work closely with appropriate partners on fabric/trim/finishing development (testing and production) and recommend alternatives on fabric/trim/finishing development;
- Ensure sample development meets quality standards and being accountable for sample hit rate;
- Identify and develop qualified mill/vendors for specific program;
- Ensure the quotation process used (from costing package dispatch to quotation submission) for potential programs are properly implemented and executed;
- Be responsible for the optimization of business development processes.
3 Order Placement, Tracking and Problem Solving
- Monitor all production activities
- Facilitate the price negotiation process and conduct capacity and production planning;
- Lead the management of orders placed with vendors ensuring complete execution and compliance (includes fabric, sample development, bulk, shipment), Ensure that the order tracking process is correct to achieve timely and quality delivery;
- Anticipate and manage all major/critical production details; Alert stakeholders on risk and propose solutions to mitigate.
- Resolve issues within a timely manner while working to continuously create and or improve internal and external processes and procedures;
4. People Management
- Coach and motivate employees to perform as individual contributors and as team members;
- Identify technical and development needs of employees, create and execute plans to increase their skills.
Requirements:
1. Knowledge, skills & abilities:
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills which can provide viable, innovative options for resolution;
- Strong planning and negotiation skills including the ability to influence at all levels to achieve business results;
- Be strategically agile, can work through ambiguity and create into a coherent strategy and roadmap leading to success;
- Can quickly learn, adapt to changes and lead others through changes while maintaining and achieving results;
- Assess talent, manage, motivate and develop others;
- Good presentation skills;
- Excellent communication skills (in written and verbal English and Mandarin)
- Independent, self-motivated and detailed orientated;
- Computer skills in MS Office.
2. Minimum educational level:
Bachelor’s degree in textile, merchandising, supply chain management or related discipline.
3. Minimum experience:
Minimum of 8 years work experience in merchandising especially for accessories (hat, scarf, glove) with at least 3 years leading a team.
4. Physical Requirements:
Ability to travel 30% (both domestic and international) of time, including on short notice.
