PLASTICS ENGINEER

Microsoft Hardware has over twenty years of success as a worldwide leader in the computer input device industry. We are searching for a Plastics Engineer that will be a key contributor to product success from marketing through production. This position will be based in Shenzhen, and work on PC accessories and Surface accessories.

As a Plastics Engineer, you will have the chance to shape product, business, and technology strategy in a startup environment by identifying new technologies, applying your molding and tooling experience, and leveraging supplier resources worldwide.

Responsibilities:
- Lead MACH Plastic Engineering efforts for new product development for multiple programs simultaneously
- Provide DFM input to cross discipline
- Develop and implement sustaining engineering strategy to ensure fully value realized from Microsoft’s tooling investments
- Manage plastic engineering relationship with Tier 1 contract manufacturers for all Hardware supply base
- Lead junior plastic engineering staff and evaluate new hires for technical competency
- Drive technical evaluations of Tier 2 tooling and molding vendor candidates
- Independently handle transfer of tooling programs without disrupting continuity of supply
- Troubleshoot and quickly remedy urgent plastic engineering issues
- Generate cost savings through process optimization

Qualifications:
- 10+ years’ experience:
- Developing and optimizing injection molding processes for efficient cycle time and capability utilizing scientific molding principles
- Design input for high volume multi cavity class I tooling
- Responsible for implementation of standard practices for both part and injection mold design
- Leading analysis and troubleshooting process for part designs, tool designs, and molding process issues with internal and external partners.
- Creating cost estimates for molding and tooling.
Experience and interest working with cross-functional/cross-culture teams both in Asia and the United States
Excellent verbal and written communication skills including working knowledge of MS Office products and experience presenting to Senior Staff via Powerpoint presentations.
Ability to travel internationally up to 20% annually.
Ability to work independently

Desired skills and experience:
- Leading RFQ exercises for both injection mold fabrication and plastic parts in Asia
- Specialty molding or finish expertise (e.g. Thixomolding, stackmolds, multishot, coatings, IMD/IML or optical tooling & processing…)
- Working knowledge of Six Sigma principles
- Pro Engineer, Moldflow, and other CAD/CAM software
- Leading supplier audits in US and Asia
- Participate and advice in all part design reviews with ME and ID
- Participate in tolerance analysis and tolerance studies to support system level RSS assembly requirements
- Research and identify new materials, manufacturing technologies and finish options
Calculate cycle times and yield rates for all manufacturing processes to determine manufacturing capacity Inform estimations of prototype and production manufacturing costs - tooling, secondary assembly, secondary finishing and piece part
- Participate in all supplier audits and final supplier selection
- Write all prototype/development tooling RFQs - plastic and metal
- Write and keep master tooling schedule updated Assign all asset tracking numbers
- Review all DFM from supplier
- Review all gating and approve all MoldFlow and Mold Warp analysis Review and approve all prototype/development tool designs
- Review and approve all tooling maintenance procedures
- Track suppliers weekly build progress
- Participate in all T1 sample trials
- Approve all FAI reports
- Approve all PPAP reports
- Back-up and store all prototype/development tool designs, secondary fixture designs, FAI reports and PPAP reports
- Direct and follow all tooling ECN activities
- Assign asset tracking numbers
- Review all DFM from supplier
- Ensure all Golden and Limit Samples are signed-off and that the supplier and Microsoft has a minimum of one set
- Review and store weekly tooling maintenance reports
