General Responsibilities

The Packaging Engineer is responsible for addressing the problems and opportunities that exist at each junction of interaction between the function of a package and its environment.

He/she must pay equal attention to the inside and outside of the package to ensure that Belkin products are perceived as the highest quality in their category and continue to build brand awareness through effective engineering and design implementation.

Work closely with the Packaging Operations Manager and vendors to ensure product development objectives and schedules are met. Develop and implement effective strategies to optimize our ability to develop packages with our suppliers.

Specific Responsibilities

· Participate in cross-functional project teams to define packaging requirements and translate marketing recommendations into realistic packaging specifications for all Belkin products.

· Work closely with marketing and product development teams to understand and subsequently translate the marketing and promotional strategy, messaging and graphic objectives into finished packages.

· Responsible for structural design and development of packages while taking into account fit, form, structure, materials, function, cost effectiveness, manufacturability, printability, consumer acceptability, quality, environmental issues, international import/export issues, storage and transportation concerns.

· Design new packages or improve existing packages for Belkin products.

· Work closely with product management, packaging vendors, manufacturing and supply chain to ensure packaging programs reach completion on time and on budget.

· Ensure that the graphic designers in the branding team have accurate templates to work on by supplying engineered die lines.

· Coordinate creation of prototype package designs for verification and sales samples.

· Conduct design evaluations of prototype samples for form, fit, function, structural integrity, cost efficiency, theft deterrence and ease of end user access to the products.

· Responsible for evaluating and approving first article samples prior to production in addition to giving direction on all intermediate revisions.

· Provide packaging suppliers all necessary artwork, package CAD data, material information and prototype 3D samples for reference to ensure effective design transfer to manufacturing.

· Package shape and size optimization based on retail partner shelf space constraints and efficient pallet pattern analysis.

· Stay current on environmentally friendly materials, plastic package mold design and thermoforming, packaging innovations, closure technology, global packaging issues, consumer trends and requirements, laws and regulations affecting packaging, processes for modifying plastic films, costs and economics of packaging, labeling, recycling, packaging environmental tradeoffs, packaging handling and transportation.

· Understand and follow company rules and regulations.

· Perform all other duties as assigned or required.

Education and Experience Requirements:

· BS in packaging or manufacturing engineering with a minor in packaging

· Minimum of 2 to 3 years packaging experience in the consumer electronics industry

· At least 3 years experience with 3D CAD. ProEngineer/ProSurface experience preferred. Solidworks experience considered.

· Possess a broad knowledge of packaging materials (including but not limited to paper, chip board, corrugated, plastic, foam) and structures for consumer products.

· Strong knowledge of and extensive working experience with package manufacturing processes, packaging machinery and rapid prototyping of packages.

· Experience working with cross-functional teams managing multiple projects.

· Superior problem solving and interpersonal communication skills with a proven ability to be an extremely flexible team member that can meet deadlines and excel in a fast-paced, demanding environment.

· Must have excellent time management skills and be able to work effectively with little management oversight.
