Supply Quality Engineer



Reports To:

Supply Quality Engineering Group, Brocade China Operations



Summary:

Responsible for assuring the quality of electrical components and assemblies supplied to Brocade's manufacturing lines. Serves as the focal point for all commodity quality related communications between Brocade Operations, suppliers and its contract manufacturers. Develops and ensures execution of commodity quality assurance and improvement plans. Supports to create the commodity quality strategy that serves the long-term needs of the business. As Brocade technical expert for the commodity, is a key influencer for commodity sourcing strategies. Works closely with Design Engineering and the supplier to ensure sound DFX decisions are made. Creates opportunities for cost reduction through value engineering as well as assures the timely execution of component part and commodity qualifications. Understands and thrives in the role of key technical resource in a business environment.



Key Measurement Criteria:

1) Continuous delivery of parts at or below commodity specified defect rates.

2) Building and maintenance of influential relationships with supplier's and Brocades technical communities.

3) On time completion of supplier readiness assessment and required qualifications.

4) Contribution to the targeted annual commodity cost reduction goal.



Experience:

· 5 years experience with steadily increasing responsibility in design, 4+ years experience supply base, and/or supply quality and process engineering, preferably with Power Commodity experience in networking or electronics companies.

· BA or BS in Electrical Engineering, advanced degrees highly desirable.



Major Responsibilities:


I. Assures the ongoing quality of supplied parts through:

Contributing supplier technical capability analysis to the sourcing process.
Conducting site qualifications including the completion of site surveys, gap analysis and gap closure plans.
Driving key component and sub-assembly qualifications.
Acting as the key interface between Design Engineering and the supplier to assure DFX principles are applied to the design of parts. Includes ensuring that supplier DFM reports are generated in a timely fashion and championed to the appropriate Brocade teams as defined in the Brocade DFM review process.
Engaging with Design and Component Engineering to assist with the definition of specifications.
Communicating specifications including ECO sign off and implementation follow up.
Definition of commodity defect level targets.
Providing supplier training as required
Review, approval and assurance of the continuous capability of supplier tooling.
Assuring that appropriate process controls are in place at the supplier and that the supplier's process is capable as required
Definition of appropriate supplier outgoing and contract manufacturer incoming inspections.
Defining and ensuring the execution of required quality data reporting.
First article inspection, maintenance of gold standards and assurance of standards controls.
Conducting source inspections when warranted.
Being the Brocade focal point for quality feedback to the suppliers.
Driving timely execution of closed loop corrective action, failure analysis, and design modification requirements through the supplier and Brocade.




II. Drives ongoing quality improvement and cost reduction through:

Creating and assuring alignment of all parties to a commodity quality plan.
Being the focal point for all commodity quality related communications among the suppliers, Brocade and its contract manufacturers.
Providing regular updates of commodity quality status and activities.
Owning the closed loop corrective action process for the commodity.
Driving commodity yield improvements throughout the supply chain.
Conducting value engineering activities including BOM analysis, circuit design and material analysis to lower total acquisition costs.

III. Develops a commodity quality strategy which supports the ongoing needs of the business, including:

· Synchronization of Brocade and supplier technical roadmaps through interaction with Design Engineering and the supply base.

· Evolution and streamlining of the qualification process including increasing the involvement of the supplier.

· Improving the shared design and development process between Brocade and its key suppliers.



Skill-sets Required:


Good understanding and knowledge base in component industry for networking or electronics products.
Ability to operate and manage effectively across technical and business functions and across multiple corporate entities.
Excellent problem solving skills.
Good communication and interpersonal skills and will work across cross-functional groups to lead defect reduction activities on key components from selected commodities.
Technical expertise in the use of and process for making the pertinent commodity items.
Ability to move flexibly from tactical to strategic thinking and performance within a very dynamic environment and constantly changing schedules and priorities.
Ability to anticipate and resolve issues, making decisions on quality related matters in a high-pressure operational environment.
Good English language skills (both writing and speaking) required.
