NATURE OF WORK
To conduct basic and product development research on microbial cultures for the fermented food industry. Application of microbiology and molecular biology approaches towards a greater understanding of microbial physiology, interactions and processes as it relates to cell growth/death and food fermentations. This position will work most closely within the local and global Culture Development R&D team and cross-functionally with technical teams involved in upstream research, culture applications and manufacturing. The individual is expected to be able to function both independently and within a project team environment by providing the technical expertise for the research and development of new products, methods, processes and basic knowledge in support of business directives.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Independently lead and conduct research on business directed projects through the application of microbiological and molecular biology methods and approaches to develop new products and technology in support of the Culture business.
- Develop project plans in conjunction with Group manager.
- Independently execute research plan to include experimental design and documentation.
- Interpret results and formulate future research actions or alternative technical solutions.
- Communicate research internally and externally.
- Become a technical expert, resource, and mentor – food microbiology, microbial physiology, and molecular biology – focus towards dairy/plant-based fermentation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ph.D or post doctor trained in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Food Science or related field with proven research experience in bacteria physiology and molecular biology; Familiar with lactic acid bacteria is a plus.
- Experience in leading & managing research project is required;
- Experience in aroma/flavor analysis & food fermentations is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to independently design, manage, and perform multi-task projects to a successful result.
- Basic knowledge and experience with molecular biology methodologies desirable: nucleic acid manipulation and sequence analysis with an understanding of basic bioinformatics.
- Experience in basic biochemical analysis (HPLC, GC etc.) is required.
- Possess excellent oral and written communication skills (both in Chinese & English) for presentation of scientific concepts and results to internal and external customers.
- Compliance with all company policies is required.
- Work experience in corporate R&D environment is highly preferred.
SCOPE OF POSITION
The incumbent will be a member of the Shanghai-based R&D group, specifically the Culture Development team. In this role, they will be expected to conduct independent research as part of multifunctional project teams, based on specific business goals as set by the Health & Protection leadership. As needed, the individual will be expected to lead projects and project teams and will develop the necessary skills to eventually manage direct reports. Direction will come from the Culture Development China Group manager. Research activities and responsibilities will be integrated into the overall global Technology as part of Health & Protection within Nutrition and Health.
The principle focus will be the research of LABs strains with the objective of developing new and improved starter cultures and application methods for the food (specifically dairy/plant-based) fermentation industry. A thorough understanding of the physiological role of microbes in the fermentation process is vital for identifying biochemical and genetic traits in the microbe essential to the process. It is expected that the incumbent will master specific technical skills commensurate with molecular biological and biochemistry methods sufficiently to independently perform such work and instruct others as well.
It is expected that the incumbent will perform their research in accordance with sound scientific principles, endeavor to maintain a current level of expertise in the area of food microbiology and foster an attitude of innovation and creativity. Additionally, it is expected that the incumbent will develop sufficient understanding to relate basic and applied research activities towards business goals and directives. The work and environment is considered multi-disciplinary requiring excellent technical, communication and people skills. Emphasis is placed upon the ability to constantly learn, improve, and apply new knowledge towards the research and business objectives. The scientist will be afforded every opportunity to expand their skill level and further develop their career.
WORK CONDITIONS
Operates in an office / laboratory environment. Full time, 40-hr per week.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Independently conduct experimental work as defined by project objectives.
- Ensure continuing project activity by coordinating the resources, supplies, equipment and priority for each project.
- Ensure that experimental results are routinely recorded in lab notebook. Updated written and/or oral reports to potential customers and to management and upon the completion of the project.
- Keep up to date on new trends, technical developments and skills by monitoring the scientific and trade literature, competitors’ activities, new methods and processes for food ingredients in associated areas though continuing education and/or technical seminars.
- Represent R&D as a scientific expert and resource for internal and external customers, conducting training presentations, answering technical questions.
- Ensure that work areas are kept clean and meet guidelines.
- Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
- Compliance with applicable company policies concerning maintaining a drug free work place is required.
