Position Summary
This position is within HARMAN’s Professional Division, based in Shenzhen Development Center (SDC). Harman is hiring the most passionate, innovative, and driven engineers on the planet to create the next generation of professional products. The desired candidate has a demonstrated record of delivering successful products to market.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position does not have any direct or indirect reports. However, principal-level engineers are expected to exhibit strong leadership skills and mentor more junior engineers to help guide their careers and activities.
Job Responsibilities:
This engineer will work in a collaborative environment to create audio products designed for global markets for Harman Professional. The engineer will be responsible for driving power supply development and implementing power supply designs as part of a project team, as well as performing individual power supply research and development.
? Design and validate DC/DC, AC/DC, and switch mode power supplies.
? Design and development of power supply products from concept to volume production while ensuring that
the design meets performance specifications, cost, and reliability targets.
? Ensure that designs comply with required regulatory standards.
? Specify, evaluate, and approve 3rd party and OEM power supplies and amplifiers.
? Create designs that minimize EMC and meet safety guidelines to ensure that products pass required
international certifications.
? Document thorough performance and thermal tests.
? Work with manufacturing and NPI to optimize design for manufacturing (DFM).
? Work with cross-functional teams (PCB layout, Mechanical engineering, Manufacturing and Quality
engineering) to achieve highly-integrated designs.
? Select raw materials, components, and suppliers based on product performance specifications, reliability, and
regulatory requirements.
? Research and evaluation of new technologies, including resonant and PFC topologies.
? Lead internal design reviews.
? Design verification testing for modules and complete systems.
? Write Technical Reports and generate Engineering Change Order/Notices.
? Perform cost analysis and create cost estimates.
? Perform reliability prediction calculations and reports.
? Perform root causes analysis for prototype and field failures.
? Analyze circuits using SPICE simulation tools to ensure design integrity in the finished hardware.
? Provide accurate cost estimates for proposed and on-going power supply designs.
? Create designs that meet thermal and environmental requirements.
? Take ownership of documentation, including design requirements, technology and design overviews, and test
reports.
? Deliver projects on-time and on budget.
? Perform root cause analysis and drive corrective actions for prototype and field failures.
? Continuously update technical and leadership skills and remain current on new technological advancements.
? Continuously drive improvements to amplifier design, testing, and manufacturability.
? Mentor and develop junior engineering talent.
Basic Qualifications:
? Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, MSEE or PhD preferred.
? 10+ years experience designing power supplies.
? Proven delivery of commercial 1000W+ power supply designs.
? Excellent knowledge of feedback and control systems.
? Expert level skills in analog circuit design and simulation.
? Experience with 3rd party power amp chip designs, including NXP, TI, ST Micro, etc.
? Strong knowledge of power, thermal, high-current, high-speed design considerations.
? Ability to select components and raw materials to ensure proper design and tolerance margins.
? Understanding of physics in design, including inductance, capacitance, magnetics, impedance, etc.
? Experience of designing EMI filters / PCB layouts for minimizing EMI.
? Understanding of IEC 60065 and other international safety standards.
? Experience with electronic packaging, electronic power supplies and power conversion products.
? Hands-on ability to perform design verification in the laboratory.
? Ability to write and analyze design documentation.
? Ability to drive product cost and manufacturing process decisions.
? Self-motivation, initiative, and drive.
? Professional-level oral and written English skills.
? Excellent mathematical and analytical skills.
? Ability to work on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment with minimum supervision.
? Computer skills in MS office.
? Strong attention to detail.
? Highly skilled in root cause analysis techniques.
? Professional-level written and elementary verbal English skills.
Preferred Qualifications & Desired Competencies:
? Master’s degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
? Fluency in written and oral English.
? Design of a commercial 1000W+ switch mode power supply.
? Expertise in IEC 60065 and other international safety standards.
? Thorough understanding of modern power factor correction (PFC) in power supply design.
? Experience in theoretical calculation of audio-band electrical noise.
? Passion for audio and music.
? Experience developing consumer products.
? Deep knowledge of audio systems and acoustic principles.
? Ability to solder to aid debug.
