Principal Analyst China – Rio Tinto Diamonds & Minerals, Shanghai

Rio Tinto is a leading international mining group headquartered in the UK. Rio Tinto's business is in finding, mining and processing mineral resources. Major products are aluminium, copper, diamonds, coal, gold, industrial minerals (borax, titanium dioxide, salt) and iron ore.

The Diamonds and Minerals Strategy and Industry Analysis team is a team focused on adding value by influencing strategy, investment and commercial decisions through the best possible economic and market analysis.

The Principal Analyst China will be primarily responsible for providing advanced industry, economic and market analysis with a focus on China, to facilitate the making of sound strategic, commercial and investment decisions. The role is responsible for setting and delivering the research agenda across the product group’s markets, and will lead the development of comprehensive, compelling insights into industry, competitors, and customers within China.

Major accountabilities include:

Reporting to the Manager, Industry Analysis, you will be responsible for:

? Generating deep market insight, identifying how such insights can be translated into commercial options and communicating this at the highest levels of the Business Unit and Product Group
? Analysing and forecasting future market and economic conditions (supply, demand, prices, costs), quality requirements, threats of substitution or new entrants, and actively participating in the development of strategy, investment and commercial decision making
? Collaborating with Rio Tinto Economics & Markets to develop and maintain a price forecasting methodology and lead the development of a data set to support the analysis
? Providing proactive and ad-hoc research reports and analyses with clear and actionable conclusions to improve understanding of industry dynamics, business fundamentals and business environment developments
? Developing local networks to provide information and assist in forming research conclusions
? Monitoring and analysing customer and competitor activity and supporting the commercial team in negotiation preparation
? Mentoring and developing junior colleagues in the sourcing and interpretation of analytical market information and the process to identify insight.

To be considered for this position it is essential that you have:

? A first degree in an Economics, Business or Technical (engineering/ science) related subject as a minimum. A post graduate degree in a Business or Economics-related subject is highly desirable
? Advanced understanding of economic theory and practice and a sophisticated understanding of the models and analysis appropriate for the business context
? A strong understanding of the value drivers within the mining and chemical industry underpinning demonstrable commercial and business acumen
? Familiarity with technical elements of mining and processing, and commodity consumption
? Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to derive conclusions and a range of potential implications from incomplete and/ or conflicting data sets
? A high-level of market analysis, judgement, insight, commercial acumen and practical experience
? An open-minded and questioning approach with both a practical and strategic outlook
? Ability to work remotely from other team members and to manage own work programme
? Ability to build and maintain relationships across all levels of the business
? Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with non-specialists both face-to-face and remotely
? High levels of accuracy and attention to detail. Concise report writing skills
? Advanced skills in the Microsoft office suite, particularly Excel
? Team leadership and capability building experience in a multicultural environment
? Fluent in Mandarin and English
