Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) is part of the Rio Tinto Group and comprises developments and operations in
Australia, North America, India and Africa. RTIO is a leading global supplier of iron ore, and iron ore
concentrates. The business directly employs over 12,000 people across four continents in addition to
several thousand contractors.
RTIO Industry Analysis is focused on detailed study and analysis of a wide range of areas including iron ore
business, steel industry and understanding the implications for the sales and marketing of our product. The
team is also focused on forecasting iron ore prices to be used for strategic decision making and business
evaluation purposes.
China plays a key role in the demand and supply of steel and iron ore. China accounts for almost half of the
world’s steel production and is therefore central in forming a view of future global iron ore demand. China’s
steel production is driven predominantly by increasing domestic consumption in construction, machinery
and infrastructure. Understanding the evolution of these industries, and the evolution of the steel industry
itself, will underpin success in this role. While being predominantly demand focussed, the role will also
support analysis of China domestic iron ore supply.
The Principal Analyst position is based in Shanghai and reports to the Manager, Industry Analysis based in
Perth.
Detailed Job Responsibilities include (but not limited to):
？ Heavy contribution to the China research agenda for RTIO Industry Analysis. This will focus on
the collation, analysis and translation of demand, supply, financial, regulatory and technical
information on the Chinese iron ore and steel industries.
？ Contribute to timely, considered and professional reporting of sector developments to relevant
stakeholders within Rio Tinto.
？ Demonstrate initiative and collaborate with other China?ased teams
？ Collect information from all publicly available sources, including specialized services and
consultants, while respecting local operating practices and procedures
？ Conduct and coordinate RTIO participation in research initiatives with E&M and third party
researchers on China?br>elated matters. Ensure the feedback of data and research findings from
these initiatives into Rio Tinto’s wider research and analysis agenda
？ Develop effective leading indicators and deliver improvements in RTIO abilities to predict
business implications and identify mitigating strategies relative to forecast commodity demand
and growth intensity
？Develop robust and innovative models
？Compare and contrast with third party information sources.
？Track and monitor forecast vs actual growth
？ Engage key stakeholders in the application of systems and models to deliver improvement in the
collation and analysis of China﹕pecific data and to improve the effectiveness and reliability of
metrics, reporting, recommendations and strategy formulation.
？ Develop presentations and major documents for a range of audiences.
To be considered for this role you will have:
？ College/University Education: First degree in an Economics related subject as a minimum.
？ Other Qualifications: Post graduate degree in an Economics related subject desirable but not
essential
？ Licenses/Certifications: Native Mandarin speaker
？ Training: Excellent written and verbal English language skills
？ Highly analytical and pragmatic/commercial focus, with extensive research capabilities
？ Excellence in engagement and communication skills:
o Develop defendable personal viewpoints and be able to make coherent recommendations
o Strong capacity to be highly effective in managing and engaging a wide range of key
stakeholders at all levels, internally/externally to Rio Tinto/RTIO and in China/overseas
locations.
？ Deep knowledge of mining industry fundamentals and key economic drivers;
？ Proven ability to take the initiative on industry analysis, and work independently;
？ Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail
？ Manage highly confidential and commercially sensitive information
？ Experienced in cost curve formation and demonstrable understanding of supply and demand
fundamentals
？ Team work – must be comfortable operating within a multidisciplinary and multiヽultural team
