Department Specific Needs:
Workshop supervision, organization and staffing of hands tool loan counter, printing, book binding, wood, plastic and metal workshop and digital fabrication facilities, scheduling of student workshop services, procurement of workshop equipment and consumables, assuring health and safety of members of the department.
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the supervision of staff of the Department of Architecture, workshop technicians primarily ensure that architectural design outcomes are produced for testing and presentation purposes in various formats including posters, bound reports and physical models. For this purpose workshop technicians establish, manage and operate workshops for printing, book binding and digital fabrication, photography, wood as well as plastic and metal work. In these workshops, technicians support students and staff in the production of their design outcomes by stocking consumables, and by introducing, loaning, operating and maintaining various kinds of tools and equipment. Technicians use workshop facilities also to help academic staff produce promotional materials and exhibition equipment for the department. Workshop technicians also assure health and safety of members of the department providing introductions into the proper use of materials and tools, ensuring the use of protective gear, providing first aid etc.
EDUCATION:
Completion of a Bachelor's degree in architecture or in another technically oriented discipline such as computer science or civil engineering (Legible copies of transcripts verifying coursework and degree must be included. Official transcripts will be required upon employment.)
LANGUAGE:
English: good reading, writing and communication skills required.
Mandarin Chinese: good reading, writing and communication skills desirable. Willingness to support departmental colleagues with Chinese language support (for example in organising and preparing off-campus study activities and equipment/material purchases) is also highly desirable.
EXPERIENCE:
Experience in the procurement, setup, maintenance and/or operation of technical equipment is required. Experience in providing services in a customer-oriented context and dedication to highest production qualities is highly desirable.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Health and safety regulations impacting workshop operations; computer and software programs applicable to digital printing and fabrication, inventory techniques and routine record keeping procedures.
ABILITY TO:
Operate office and workshop equipment including standard office software packages. Assess and ensure health and safety standards. Work independently at high levels of quality. Relate to distributors, vendors and maintenance staff outside of the university. Assist in some budget preparation activities. Manage student workshop service schedules. Promote and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; work independently in carrying out assignments of position. Support the department with a proactive, friendly and service-oriented attitude and some flexibility in facilitating non-routine tasks and events (such as for example the preparation and setup of student work exhibitions inside or outside of the department).
OTHER:
Candidates must demonstrate clear evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of students, staff and the university community.
WORKING HOURS:
Normal office hours and break times apply as per university regulations. Besides regular office hours, technicians are expected to work during evening hours and on weekends on several occasions during the academic year before key submission dates to support students produce display and submission materials (posters, report documents, architectural models).
CONTACTS: Students, co-workers including other departmental staff and faculty, administrators, vendors and repair staff.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: The positions requite the ability to exert some physical effort, such as walking, standing and lifting; dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs and body in the operation of workshop and office equipment. Good eyesight and hearing are required. Tasks require extended periods of time at a keyboard and at different kinds of workshop equipment.
