We are looking for you as one of 12 cost masters who together will form an expert task force. The cost masters will have superior ability to assess product costs as produced in our supply chains. You know intimately how to assess product costs and how to do product cost calculations. You are familiar with a number of technologies and have a good “feel” for benchmarking cost levels. You have a network with peers to keep on building on your knowledge and benchmarks. You are also able to easily build and extend your personal network within the company to gain acceptance of your insights and thus delivering better cost solutions for our company.

Cost masters are seniors who work on demand for Procurement Engineering or Commodity Management, over time also directly for the business. Initially the work will be almost exclusively in project setting, supporting DfX conventions. The work involves heavy travelling, mostly in the same region where you are based but also to some extent travel and work will be globally. For the time spent in the own office we will set up “teardown labs” to further develop your skills as a Cost Master and for benchmark purposes.

Cost masters do direct fact gathering at suppliers on cost drivers and cost incurred, to create models of product costs and assess the fairness of prices suppliers charge us. They also initiate price negotiations as needed and provide the commodity teams with fact based information and other support to ensure success of the negotiations.

Education: BS/MS or comparable diploma in Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical or Electronic Engineering. Alternatively, people with pure economics background, or with vocational training may also be considered if they have a superior record of cost assessment experience and negotiation success.

Formal experience:
>5 years of experience in cost estimation and assessment which includes:
· Creating product hierarchies in R&D and mapping them to the supply chain
· Creating product cost models including supplier overhead cost structures
· Using activity based costing to identify cost drivers and estimate cost of industrial processes
· Conducting supplier visits and estimating cost drivers at supplier sites
· Analyzing alternative scenarios of production technology, industrial setup or footprint etc.

Candidates are supposed to be “street smart” and able to second guess statements made to us by negotiation counterparties. Candidates have ideas for smart observations, measurements or sometimes experiments that uncover the true cost drivers.

Personal profile: Candidates must have first hand experience working at the interface with R&D, procurement and supply chain, and they have seen many production facilities and can at a glance appreciate differences. Candidates are precise and disciplined workers who are not daunted by single handedly creating cost calculation sheets that may have hundreds of lines.

Candidates are seniors who easily interact with our own management, as well as with the top management of our suppliers, as they will be doing or following up on supplier visits. Candidates are eager to see results and have the work implemented in negotiations.

Candidates need to be willing to travel at times 50% or more, visiting suppliers across the region / world.

Career perspective: Cost masters are most successful as part of a team where comparing benchmarks and cross-calibration of estimation levels between individuals occur regularly. This team will have a high level leader. In addition, after some years cost masters could move laterally into PE, CM, CM-T roles, depending on their specific personal profile and skills.

Reporting line is to Executive Level Project / Program Leader Cost Masters.
