About the role
Economics is one of two centralised analytical teams forming the Group’s new market analysis capability within the Commercial Excellence Transformation. The team is based in Singapore with a presence in China and India.
The Economics team reports to the Group CFO and is led by the Managing Director for Economics. It is responsible for the analysis and delivery of insights related to the global economy (with a particular focus on China and India) and long-term industry and commodity dynamics and forecasts. The Economics team is accountable for the recommendation of long-run PEG prices used for Group valuations and investment.
The Principal Analyst (China), working with other members of the Shanghai-based China Research Team, provides well-reasoned, innovative and fully formed analysis of Chinese economic, commodity and policy issues in support of the department’s project work. Working proactively and constructively with others is a firm requirement. The role requires continuous development of the Principal Analyst’s understanding of commodities and of the macro environment that shapes them. Familiarity with a broad range of analytical methodologies and communication tools is essential.
Reporting to the General Manager, China Research & Analysis, you will:
Provide economic analysis and contribute as a thought leader:
· Provide long-term primary research and economic analysis of Chinese economic, policy and commodity issues to the Rio Tinto Group, with focus on themes and issues affecting multiple commodities. · Concisely and effectively communicate analysis and conclusions to Economics team management. · Ensure that the work of the China team is effectively integrated into PEG and macro analysis prepared by other members of the team. · Contribute to the development of business implications of the analysis and effectively communicate them to relevant stakeholders. · Develop effective relationships across functions and product groups to build coalitions that can identify and interpret relevant issues and questions associated research. · Lead and effectively manage project work, engaging the broader Economics team and including relevant stakeholders. · Prepare well designed and comprehensive presentation slides, reports, and spreadsheets and be able to communicate their key messages in simple, clear and effective language. · Find and manage sources of reliable information and data and work to broaden the contact network of the China Research team. · Possess a deep understanding of the drivers of macro-economic and commodity trends and improve quality of research, reports and verbal communications. · Actively participate in scheduled team compliance and skills training and lead by example.
About you
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
- Preferably a Baccalaureate and graduate degree in Economics or Economics-related subject, including mathematics, statistics, finance and accounting.
- A deep understanding of economic theory and practice and the models and analytical techniques appropriate to different project contexts. Technical competency in at least one econometric/statistical package is helpful.
- Ability to effectively lead analyst teams and support the development of younger analysts.
- A well-developed network across Chinese economic, commodity and policy circles.
- Strong report writing skills, including the effective use of graphical information
- Strong project management skills and mind-set – able to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong IT skills including MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access.
- A deep understanding of the Chinese economy at both micro and macro level.
- Fluency in written and spoken Mandarin.
- Ability to develop research concepts.
- Ability to conduct and lead primary research.
- Ability to build and maintain effective relationships.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- High levels of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Open-minded and questioning approach.
- Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision.
- Highly organised, able to prioritise workload and actively manage own career.
- High energy and agility.
- Flexible approach, able to respond to changing priorities.
- 5-10 years of relevant experience in commodities and macroeconomic analysis
