Key Objectives/ Principal Accountabilities

Key objective: Protecting the IP assets of the company in China. Managing the IP service in China. Providing technical IP counsel to businesses in China.

Setting standards
? Set, maintain and communicate standards for protecting trade secrets in China Set and maintain a good freedom-to-operate, trademarking and patenting process for China
? Set, maintain and communicate IP ownership standards for China
? Set, maintain and communicate technology transfer standards for China
? Set, maintain and communicate IP remuneration standards for China
? Contribute to legislative developments and enforcement improvements as beneficial to the company
Manage IP service
? Ensure good interaction and cooperation with the global BU IP counsels and the legal staff
? Manage and develop the IP staff in China
? Manage the selection, engagement and performance of IP service providers in China
? Functional management of the Deco anti-counterfeit team and activities
? Manage the IP China budget

Counsel businesses
? Educate RD&I staff and other relevant employees on protection opportunities
? Educate and support businesses in implementing trade secret protection measures
? Freedom-to-operate and patent validity assessments for Chinese businesses
? Initial idea assessments and patentability opinions for Chinese businesses
? Managing local patent prosecution as required
? Manage civil IP litigation and criminal prosecution in IP matters
? Provide IP support in M&A transactions
? Draft and review IP development, transfer and license agreements

? 8-15 years patent expertise

Job Context AkzoNobel has an ambitious growth agenda for China. To a large extent it wishes to grow through organic growth by investing in its brands, technical innovation and marketing innovation. Good intellectual property protection is of the essence. The position will lead the IP service for China. He/she will develop and implement IP standards, educate business colleagues and manage the IP service to the businesses. He/she will build up a network of IP service providers and develop and implement processes to support local IP registration and manage IP litigation. As a member of a corporate function, the position should be service oriented, yet strong at acting in the interest of the company as a whole.
