SCOPE OF THE ROLE AND BASIC PURPOSE

1. This job description covers skills & responsibilities of the R&D Design Engineer position located in the JJMC, SH office
2. The R&D Design Engineer is responsible for: Interacting with customers, such as surgeons and medical professionals to understand market needs; executing specific & general assignments that establish the feasibility of innovative, functional product concept designs; and/or, Executing specific & general assignments that provide innovative, functional, cost effective & validated product designs

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Utilize JOC (jobs, outcomes & constraints), VOC (voice of customer) methodologies & surgical procedure knowledge to define product & design options.
• Provide innovative product, system & component design solutions.
• Perform detailed design analysis & provide input or approval for detailed design specifications.
• Establish appropriate testing strategy to insure adequate safety factors or margins.
• Perform product testing to insure adequate safety factors or margins.
• Formalize concepts, breadboards & prototyping.
• Provide support to patent attorneys for patent filing.
• Consult with materials technology group for biomaterial approvals.
• Assist in developing & monitoring project plan, budget, contingency plans & work estimation.
• Coordinate integration of complex sub-system product designs.
• Develop free-body diagrams; Calculate stress & strain values; Formulate tolerance stack-ups.
• Work Environment: Office, laboratory, surgical and manufacturing facilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Bachelor Degree or above with discipline of mechanical engineering, or equivalent.
2. 5+ year working experiences in design for mechanical devices.
3. Effective oral, written, & presentation communications in English/Mandarin
4. Effective team interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively within diverse cultural environments
5. Able to take initiative & be self-managing
6. General design engineering principles
7. 3D CAD software proficiency(UG is a plus)
8. Design of experiments (DOE)
9. DFMA (design for manufacturing and assembly) principles
10. Patent interpretation
11. Test development and execution
12. Free-body & stress-strain analysis & FEA (finite element analysis)
13. Special design analysis software, (e.g., Mathcad ,Matlab ,Crystal ball)
14. Geometric tolerance & tolerance stack-up analysis (GD&T)
15. Gage repeatability & re-calibration system & methodology
16. Plastic resins, ferrous & nonferrous metals, adhesives & sealants
17. Personal computer software – Windows: word processing, project planning, presentation, e-mail & spreadsheet software
