GENERAL SUMMARY

Applies advanced systems level technical expertise to resolve standard to complex systems level customer issues. Customer issues may be received by Support Centers through automated dial-homes, voice initiated technical calls from EMC Customers.

Skills Required
  
IBM i host –
Knowledge of IBM i host commands, which may be required to assist the customer and to collect information from the host for analysis
Host admin skills to be able to understand host concepts and to understand customer host output.
Use of System Service tools and the various options within the tools, plus use of Dedicated Service tools and how to be able to access the different tool sets.
Understanding of the IPL options which may be used, specifically during any host outage or DU scenario.
Disk management and presentation of disk devices to the host – specifically to fully understand multipath options and how to troubleshoot path issues.
Host troubleshooting – identification and collection of required logs and analysis of product activity logs
Host performance collection file analysis (understanding of how the files are created, collected and can be transferred from the host – including the use of IBM save files and FTP)
Understanding and use of IBM i GUI tools (for example the IBM i Navigator)
ASP concepts and a level of knowledge of independent ASP
Basic understanding of host job logs
Basic understanding and use of IBM QShell
Basic understanding of the IBM PTF processes and PTF impact
Basic understanding of the legacy load source options and potential impacts (use of mirroring which is still in use at customer sites)
Basic understanding of alternative products such as IBM VIOS and the use of vSCSI and vFC with the IBM i host
 
  
IBM Hardware Management Console (HMC)
Understand the concepts of the HMC
Understand the concepts of partitioning
Basic knowledge of host configuration requirements and identification of tagged adapters.
Basic knowledge of host errors reported via the HMC and resolution options.
  
SRDF/Timefinder Manager for IBM i (STM)
Complete knowledge of the EMC STM product
Customer installations, installation requirements and identifying potential root cause of installation issues.
Upgrades to existing installations and problem resolution following upgrades
Full knowledge of STM commands and capabilities, including understanding the use of commands and menu options
Full trouble shooting skill set for the product to include obtaining required information from the host, including symapi and stordaemon logs
Basic understanding of stordaemon and required services for the STM product
Basic understanding of customers scripted processes and the basic ability to understand host logs to assist the customer pin point script issues.
Basic ability to cross reference STM commands with Solutions Enabler commands and the interaction between the two.
  
EMC storage array (including Symmwin and Solutions Enabler)
Use of remote support tools to access customer storage arrays
Collection and review of array bin files
Use of Symmwin tools including basic inline commands to analyse errors (including device and connectivity errors)
Use of Symcli commands to collect and analyse customer configuration
Full understanding and use of Symcli commands to analyse device masking and presentation to the IBM i host
Understanding of legacy EMC equipment
Basic understanding of zoning options and requirements for host connectivity.
Understanding of Symcli configuration commands and Unisphere options for creation of IBM i host devices (including legacy 2107 meta devices)
 
  
Miscellaneous
Use of WebEx tools to assist the customer.
Use of ESM to validate the customer configuration, plus to highlight any ESM changes/updates as required.
Assist other EMC teams, for example Data Domain with any IBM i host configuration related queries
