Nature Communications is the world’s leading multidisciplinary Open Access journal, publishing high-quality research from across the natural sciences. To help us to build on this success, we now have exciting opportunities for a Team Manager and a Locum Team Manager to each manage a physical sciences editorial team for the journal. The ideal candidates will have a PhD (or equivalent), and preferably postdoctoral experience in an area within physics, chemistry, geoscience or materials science.
Editorial experience is essential as the successful candidates will be responsible for a team of Nature Communications editors spread across our London, Shanghai and New York offices. A Team Manager should be able to demonstrate a clear strategy for attracting the highest impact papers to the journal while ensuring that we continue to meet the needs of our editors, authors, referees and readers.
Reporting to the Chief Physical Sciences Editor, the successful candidates will work closely with the editors in their team on all aspects of the editorial process, and play an important role in determining the representation of their own field in the journal through the appropriate selection of manuscripts. This role will also entail significant liaison with the scientific community, the other Nature Communications teams, the Research Journal Chief Editors and the Editorial Advisory Panel.
This is a demanding and intellectually stimulating position. Broad scientific knowledge and training, excellent literary skills and a keen interest in the practice and communication of science are a prerequisite. The successful candidates must therefore have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The salary and benefits will be competitive, reflecting the critical importance and responsibilities of this role.
Responsibilities:
Management and Development:
· Manage a subset of the physical sciences editorial staff at Nature Communications
· Organise the recruitment, training and support of manuscript editors within that team, in conjunction with the Chief Physical Sciences Editor.
· Liaise with the Chief Physical Sciences Editor and other Team Managers to maintain good editorial practice and editorial consistency across disciplines, following procedures determined by the Chief Physical Sciences Editor and the Executive Editor, Nature Communications.
Editorial:
· Select and reject manuscripts for publication within a given field, within the framework of the Nature Communications editorial policy and following procedures determined by the Chief Physical Sciences Editor and the Executive Editor, Nature Communications.
· Ensure that manuscripts accepted for publication are transferred to production in an appropriate, complete state. Work with the Editorial Production and Web Production teams to ensure the smooth processing of manuscripts and other material.
· Write content for the website, such as editor’s summaries.
· Devise and supply editorial content for special projects, such as supplements, as agreed with the Chief Physical Sciences Editor
· Attend conferences and meetings and visit research institutions in your field with the aim of soliciting papers for Nature Communications and giving general advice about the most suitable Springer Nature journal for authors’ work. Such activities should prompt a brief written report for circulation to the editorial team and other relevant colleagues
Experience, skills and qualifications
· A science graduate, with a PhD in a related discipline
· People management skills
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills
· Thorough knowledge of the scientific community and its needs
· Sound knowledge and interest in science in general
· Strong editorial experience at a Nature-quality research journal
