Rolls-Royce in China
Rolls-Royce has a 45-year track record of business success and fruitful partnerships in China. As a leading global provider of power systems, Rolls-Royce continues to develop its strong position in civil aerospace, marine and energy sectors.
Civil Aerospace
Rolls-Royce has positioned itself to serve the growing international and domestic aviation market in China. Our customers in China include all major airlines, such as Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, HNA Group, Sichuan Airlines and Xiamen Airlines.
Our field service officers are stationed in major airports throughout China, providing timely on-the-ground support to our customers.
Together with our associate company International Aero Engines (IAE), of which Rolls-Royce owns 32.5%, Rolls-Royce powers more than 500 aircraft in China, including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.
Marine
As China grew to become one of the world’s top shipbuilders, Rolls-Royce’s marine business experienced strong growth in providing system solutions in this market. In 2005, Rolls-Royce established its 6,000 square meter manufacturing facility in Nanhui industrial zone in Shanghai. The facility employs a 200-strong workforce, including a growing team of service engineers.
Rolls-Royce offers a diverse range of products including deck machinery, tunnel thrusters, rudders, controllable pitch propellers, Azimuth thrusters, waterjets and stabilising systems.
Shanghai is the North East Asian marine headquarters. It is also a supply chain management and sourcing hub for Rolls-Royce’s global marine manufacturing business. In order to be close to our customers, our service and marketing teams are also based in Dalian to serve the northern China market, and in Hong Kong to serve southern China and Taiwan.
Energy
The West-East Pipeline Project (WEPP) is one of China’s most important energy infrastructure projects. The WEPP Line 1, which runs from Lunnan, Xinjiang Province, through 8 provinces (or 4,000 km) to reach Shanghai, transports gas for electricity generation and heating. The West-East Pipeline has enabled Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta to dramatically increase the use of clean natural gas while reducing its dependence on coal.
Working closely with PetroChina, Rolls-Royce is providing 19 RB211 gas turbine packages and 6 motor driven units to the WEPP Line 1.
Line 2 of the West-East Pipeline will transport gas from Horgas, at the Kazakhstan border of Xinjiang, to Guangzhou in southern China. Rolls-Royce will be providing 6 compressor packages for the 2450 km Western section, which runs from the Chinese border with Kazakhstan to Zhongwei, Ningxia Province.
Supply Chain
In pursuit of a world-class supply chain, Rolls-Royce has rigorous purchasing policies and very high expectations of its suppliers.
China is an integral part of our global supply chain. We have cultivated an extensive network of suppliers, which provide important components for our Civil Aerospace, Marine and Energy products.
For more than 30 years, we have been committed to building collaborative relationships with our suppliers, many of which are subsidiaries of Aviation Industries of China (AVIC).
Joint venture – XR Aerocomponents (XRA)
In 1996, Rolls-Royce set up a joint venture with Xi’an Aero-engine (Group) Ltd. (XAE), a Shanghai-listed major subsidiary of Aviation Industries of China (AVIC). XRA is one of two joint ventures Rolls-Royce has established and licensed globally which specializes in casting processes.
XRA employs 400 people in its 13,000 square metre factory, which specialises in equiax casting and machining for turbine blades and nozzle guide vanes. XRA’s aerocomponents are used in Rolls-Royce engines including the BR 700 family of engines designed for regional and corporate jets, the RB211 family of high bypass turbofan engines, as well as the Tay, Spey and Avon engines.
In 2009, XRA opened a subsidiary called XR Turbines (XRT) in an economic processing zone, which specialises in machining for low pressure turbine blades as well as high and low pressure nozzle guide vanes (NGVs) at low cost and high efficiency.
Joint venture – Hong Kong Aero Engine Services Limited (HAESL)
HAESL is one of the world’s most respected facilities in the aircraft engine repair and overhaul market. Offering comprehensive services that include component repair, HAESL combines the strength of Rolls-Royce as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) with the experience of SIAEC and HAECO for airframe and engine maintenance.
