Position Overview:

You will manage a team of industrial designers. You will work with a group of very talented and highly motivated researchers, designers and engineers at Speck China office. You will have full responsibility for the interaction with both existing and potential clients. This role will include generating proposals, managing team and projects, providing project related advice and oversight, and actively managing client expectations. The successful candidate has extensive experience of designing and developing new products from concept through production and presenting those designs to clients or internal clients. This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified design manager or senior designer interested in growing his technical skills and management skills, increasing the visibility of Speck to domestic companies and contributing to the overall growth of the company.

Primary responsibilities:
· Provide high level management and interaction with the Industrial Design group, including project related advice and oversight.

· The candidate shall have demonstrated effectiveness in understanding project scope, generating proposals for projects. The candidate shall have experience using Microsoft Project, PowerPoint, Word, and Adobe Illustrator good graphic design skills as well as have a very well rounded knowledge of the design process. Experience in designing medical devices, consumer electronics, or telecomm equipment is a plus.

· The candidate must be fluent in English and Mandarin.

The ability to craft sales presentations in both languages is a plus

Primary responsibilities:

· Provide high level management and interaction with the Industrial Design group, including project related advice and oversight.

· Project Management, including direct communication with clients on design related issues, managing budgets and resources for your projects, sending out weekly status updates to the client, managing customers expectations and adjusting output based on feedback from client.

· Industrial design

· Presentations, preparing and executing design reviews with clients.

· Learning, developing and improving the design process at Speck ,as well as Speck objects,standards and deliverables, and management process.

· Contributing to the long term development and direction at Speck.

Skills (tools, software, communication)

Industrial Design, including hands-on creative design using rapid visualization techniques, sketching, graphic design applications and CAD tools (such as Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, RhinoCAD and/or Alias) to prepare scale drawings of designs, shop tools and prototyping tools.

· Reviewing and transferring files from Solid Works and ProE using IGES, STEP or DXF translation.

· Developing early phase foam models by using industrial shop tools such as band saw, table saw, disk sander, lathe, and manual mill.

· Participating in creative brainstorms, concept development and refinement.

Understanding and utilizing various production methods and materials.

Managerial

· Project management both on an individual level and a group level, including schedule and budget responsibilities.

· Coordinating and performing project design presentations.

· Vendor liaison and model build/prototype management.

· Client interface and communication, including client contact, proposal writing and client management throughout the projects.

· Mentoring the junior designers within the industrial design group.

· Ongoing search for talent, contractors and interns

Operations (processes, environment)

· Learning, developing and improving the design process and design tools at Speck, as well as Speck goals, standards of deliverables, and management processes.

· Keeping up with current industrial design trends.

· Contributing to the long term development and direction at Speck.

· Presenting and evaluating designs based on appearance and functionality.

Preparing manufacturer specifications for materials such as wood, fabric, metals and plastics.

Education and Experience:

· The candidate will have a BS in Industrial Design. The candidate will have a minimum 10+ years relevant design and client facing experience. Experience in a design consultancy is desired.
