POSITION TITLE: Microbiologist I – NSF Shanghai Laboratory

LINE OF BUSINESS: Microbiology Laboratory

REPORTS TO: Laboratory Site Manager

BASIC PURPOSE: Perform microbiological methods as they relate to daily job activity of Food/Dietary Supplement/Water Division of the microbiology laboratory.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Provide primary support in the processing of samples for Food, Dietary Supplement and Water programs. Duties include:

a. Sample Preparation

b. Sample Processing

c. Data Analysis and Entry

2. Carry out daily experimentation according to GB, International and ANSI/NSF Standards/SOP and specific protocols.

3. Primary oversight of purchasing and inventory system, including ordering and database updating, as it applies to the microbiology laboratory.

4. Assist in proposal and report writing.

5. Attend technical conferences as required.

6. Perform all applicable corporate and laboratory quality control procedures including setup of control charting spike samples and proficiency test samples.

7. Review and author applicable Standard Operating Procedures.

8. Meet turnaround time commitments.

9. Participate in cross-training various levels of laboratory staff in lab policies, techniques, methods procedures.

10.Understand and follow established quality assurance and chain-of-custody procedures.

11.Prepare all records (data, notebooks, and instrument books) in a timely, thorough, and neat manner.

12.Take action to correct all QA problems and potential delays, communicating the issue as appropriate.

13.Maintain instruments and equipment in proper operating conditions.

14.Assure adherence to the safety and health policies and procedures.

15.Coordinate media and reagent preparation requests.

16.Assist in training of new laboratory personnel.

17.Provide technical support for clients.

18.Participation in new method development and validation.

19.Perform other duties as requested.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelor’s degree in microbiology and at least two years related working experience.

2. Experience with general microbiological and molecular methodology in enumeration and identification.

3. Familiarity with instrumentation for microbiology and virology assays.

4. Knowledge and experience with laboratory QA/QC plans, manuals, and procedures.

5. Experience with PCs and Windows applications.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Work experience in a third party microbiology testing laboratory.

2. Understanding of, and experience with, laboratory information management systems (LIMS).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Capable of lifting 20-30 lbs on a routine basis.
2. Long periods spent standing.
3. Repetitive motions involved in sample processing.
4. Forty hour work week.
