Job Title:
Senior Mechanical Engineer – China(Guangzhou,Dongguan,Shenzhen)

General Description:

Mechanical design engineering role working directly with iRobot US Mechanical Engineering team. Position will be
responsible for delivering specification, ideation, analysis, design, development, verification, and manufacture
of state-of-the-art mobile robotic systems for iRobot. Position will be a member of the iRobot team based in
Guangzhou and will report directly to a US based engineering manager and secondarily to a China based manager.
This position has the potential to grow into an engineering leadership position.

Job Responsibilities:
*Work directly with US based engineering team to provide mechanical layouts and detailed part design, creating
and/or updating 3D CAD models and associated 2D drawings using Pro-E Wildfire.
*Provide on-site support at all China contract manufacturers for US based design engineering team on a
daily/weekly basis.
*Follow iRobot drawing standards to generate appropriately dimensioned drawings with vendor capable
tolerances and GD&T that assure desired assembly performance using Tolerance Stack Analysis.
*Ensure that all design documentation is complete, accurately reflects final manufactured product and stored in a well-structured manner in Windchill PDM.
*Initiate and process engineering change requests as needed to resolve deficiencies in released designs, reduce
costs and/or improve performance.
*Work closely with US engineering team and China contract manufacturers to perform root cause analysis and rapid resolution for any non-compliance in product performance.
*Assist with planning and oversight of verification/validation testing performed at China contract manufacturers.
*Conduct cross-functional design reviews with US engineering and China contract manufacturers.
*Partner as needed with China based iRobot manufacturing and quality personnel.
*Understand and communicate technical risks, ensuring that supervisor understands and is aware of new risks as
they arise.
*Assist in the procurement of prototypes for initial design verification.

Required Skills/Experience:
*BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
*4 years minimum experience in product development of mechanical systems
*4 years minimum experience working for (or with) a US based company
*4 years minimum experience with 3D CAD, preferably using Pro-E Wildfire
*2 years minimum experience in plastic part design
*Product Data Management software, preferably with PTC Windchill v9.1
*Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint
*Strong prioritization skills
*Above average spoken and written English language
*Ability to obtain US visa and to travel to US approximately 3 times per year, 2-3 weeks per trip.

*Experience working with manufacturers of “complete-in-the-box” retail products
*ASME drafting standards, dimensional management methods and ASME Y14.5-2009 GD&T standard
*High-volume consumer electronics development from concept through production
*Pro/E surfacing
*Material selection, especially with plastics
*Rapid prototyping methods
*Small mechanism design, especially gears, bearings, wheels, linkages, etc.
*Kinematics & dynamics analysis methods, especially with ProMechanism
*Structural design, stress & fatigue analysis, especially with ProMechanica
*Structured problem solving methods, including 8D, is/is-not, fault-tree and “fish-bone” analysis
*Mobile robotic platform development
*Floor care product design, especially battery-powered portable vacuum cleaning systems
*Design for Manufacturability, Assembly, Serviceability, Recyclability
*Fluid flow theory, analysis & practical application, including CFD methods, especially with CFDesign
*Fluid handling systems and thermal management
*Optics, light piping and infrared light management
*Sound & vibration development
*Failure avoidance methods, including DFMEA
*Experience in selection and use of both DC brushed and brushless motors.
*Sensor systems, including rotational encoders, infrared, hall effect, sonar, inertial, laser scanners, vision
