Position Summary

     Works under limited supervision to follow experimental protocols to perform complex chemical laboratory operations related to compounding, molding, and testing of plastic products, formulations and applications with emphasis on safety and data reliability.  Carries out experimental benchmarking of product performance and applications issues of Cabot and competitive products.  Writes experimental protocols and reports experimental data in technical reports. May provide training and/or technical guidance to technicians.

 

Key Areas of Responsibility

      ·         Tests and investigates a wide variety of product performance and applications issues.  Conducts laboratory tests on existing or new Cabot products to determine performance.  Tests and evaluations often include complex formulations and proper plastic compounding, molding and testing in complex equipment. ·         Conducts testing on a variety of Cabot and competitive products.  ·         Generates, organizes data and provides more advanced interpretation to identify issues. ·         Documents test results through the use of laboratory notebooks, records and databases ·         Responds to customer inquiries by providing relevant and timely data.  May provide information to customers regarding selection and use of Cabot products.  ·         May provide training and/or technical guidance to less experienced technicians. ·         Recommends development of new procedures, test methods and equipment. ·         Calibrates testing equipment and performs routine maintenance as needed. Maintains control chart for standard testing methods. ·         Participates in scheduled safety meetings and completes safety training requirements.

 

Required Skills

     ·         Broad knowledge of plastic laboratory terminology, equipment and procedures. Knowledge of chemical and laboratory safety management and waste disposal practices. Believes in working safely in the laboratory and has good organizational and housekeeping practices. ·         Some functional knowledge of math and statistics, specifically, Design of Experiments. ·         Strong analytical skills in order to troubleshoot and resolve technical problems.  Ability to draw conclusions from experimental work.  ·         Service orientation and ability to follow through and resolve customer problems and respond in a prompt and efficient manner. ·         Communications skills.  Listening skills and ability to ask probing questions in order to understand underlying issues.  Ability to translate technical terminology and speak and write clearly.  ·         Ability to communicate in English may be required and it is a plus. ·         Computer skills and ability to use electronic database and spreadsheet applications. ·         Collaborative attitude and inter-personal skills; willing to share information and resources with peers.

 

Education/Experience

      ·         Laboratory vocational training or Bachelor’s degree in sciences or engineering (Polymer Science, Materials Engineering, majoring in polymers, Chemical Engineering Polymer). ·         1-3 years’ laboratory experience related to formulating, polymer processing and testing of plastic materials and chemical products required.
