About the Role

    

The Principle Component Engineer will report into the HARMAN Component Engineering organization and will be responsible for developing technical strategies to advance part selection and sourcing decisions. The principle engineer has primary technical responsibility for commonization of materials, parts and specifications for use within HARMAN, and will provide technical leadership to the organization in problem resolutions, mega changes, supply disruptions or during implementation of new material technologies.

    

Component types:  Capacitors, Resistors, Inductors/Magnetics, Crystals, Oscillators, Switches, Encoders, Fans, PCB’s, Connectors, Diodes, Transistors, Standard Logic IC’s, Drivers, Power Management IC’s, IC Amplifiers, IC Sensors, Memories, Controllers, etc. for automotive applications.

What You Will Do

  • Develop category technical strategy by aligning supplier base technology roadmaps, manufacturing capabilities and market trends with HARMAN internal product strategies and business requirements.
  • Drive commonization of materials, parts and specifications by overseeing the material review and optimization process for all HARMAN product designs. Initiate and maintain contact with platform design owners across HARMAN to obtain agreement on common materials, parts and specifications to be used in future platform products.
  • Lead (as technical expert) the selection, qualification and approval of suppliers for category strategy development. Coordinate category plan reviews with engineering/Supply-Chain/quality executives and other stakeholders. Conduct supplier technological assessment & audit.
  • Lead technical analysis for complex/critical Supplier Change Request (SCR), including material, design, and process changes. Identify and evaluate potential risks which may affect Fit-Form-Function, quality and reliability. Develop reliability qualification plan according to change points and impacts. Assist product teams risk assessment and risk mitigation/verification plan. Assist product teams in customer communications for complex change approval.
  • Lead Structured Problem Solving in selected critical component quality issues, including component application issues, component design issues, component supplier manufacturing (Fab/Assembly /Testing) defect issues. Drive zero defect initiatives, drive 8D and corrective actions. Assist in customer communications in Problem Solving.
  • Act as component application expert to assist design engineers during product development cycles. Resolve related application issues, communicate with customers to understand product level requirements, work with design engineers for component selection and debugging. Provide/negotiate technical solutions with customers.
  • Lead identification, evaluation and qualification of interchangeable parts from different sources to mitigate Supply-Chain risks or for cost reduction. Monitor and mitigate obsolescence (DMSMS) issues within major development programs to prevent Last Time Buys.
  • Develop and own component specifications, qualification standards, test procedures, design standards, and component database (lifecycle) structures according to technology/market trends, Supply-Chain dynamics and internal business needs.
  • Act as Center of Expertise of the component categories, engage with engineering and Supply-Chain to assure linkage & leverage, supply base optimization and materials/specifications communization.
  • Drive Design-for-Manufacturing and Design-to-Cost initiatives. Collaborating with Advanced Manufacturing Engineering to find optimum component Design-for-Manufacturing solutions.
  • Research & analyze electronics market, industry & technology development, understand trends, changes, constraints, risks and opportunities associated with each component category.

                                                


            

What You Need

  • B. S. or M.S. (preferred) in Engineering – Electrical/Electronics, Micro-Electrics, Mechanical, Materials, Physics or relevant fields.
  • At least 10 years of experience in a hardware engineering role. Experience in semiconductor/IC application field (like application engineer) or quality excellence in IC manufactory is preferred.
  • Excellent technical capability/leadership in terms of decision making, creative problem solving and innovation, be able to provide tech solutions cross projects and teams.
  • Good knowledge of electrical/semiconductor component physics, design, layout, simulation, quality and reliability. Good understanding of Circuit Board (PCB) design and surface mount (SMT) manufacturing equipment, processes and electronic component packages.
  • Good understanding of engineering documents (e.g. schematics, component datasheets, Gerber files) and document control practices. EE background is highly appreciated, e.g. circuit & layout design, ECAE tools for simulations (Saber, Hyperlink, MathCAD), DRBFM & DFSS methodologies, etc.
  • Solid understanding of automotive Product Development Process, Supplier Change Requests (PCN/PDN) process, PPAP process and other common automotive quality procedures and stress test specifications (IATF16949, ISO26262, IEC/IPC standards, JEDEC, AEC-Q100/200, etc.)
  • Experience of using Shainin Red X, Six Sigma or other problem-solving tools or methodologies. Demonstrated knowledge of robust engineering, Design of Experiments and Statistical Process Control. Six Sigma Green Belt certification is a minimum requirement.
  • Good knowledge of supplier management practices, supplier industry, component market trends, cost drivers, and material cost saving techniques.
  • Must be a leader and a change agent, with strong analytical, interpersonal, presentation skills.
  • Must be a good teacher/mentor.

What is Nice to Have

    

  • Red X Master, Six Sigma MBB, DFSS Master, Robust Coach.
  • Solid theoretical and practical background in electrical engineering, with exposure to mechanical engineering and products, adaptable to a wider range of tasks and can function effectively in an engineering expert role within a matrix organization.
  • The position is focused 40% or more on component application and Problem Solving and requires professional experience in that area.
  • Prior experience with accelerated reliability testing, reliability theory, component destructive physical analysis (DPA), and failure analysis.
  • Familiarity with IC Failure Analysis and tools like X-ray, SAT, OBIRCH, FIB, SEM, etc. Familiar with common reliability validation tests.
  • Understanding of passive components, microcircuit, hybrid, semiconductor and discrete device fabrication.

                

  • Familiarity and experience with sourcing issues for electronic components.
  • Solid understanding of the global supply chain and component cost structures.

        

  • Working knowledge of any PDM/PLM/ERP applications.
