JOB TITLE:            Pipe Stress Engineer

REPORTS TO:      Piping Section Manager

 

Job Purpose:

1. Project Role - Appointed as engineer-pipe stress analysis on a project with the prime objective of carrying activities of Pipe Stress Analysis Discipline and providing technical support through all project phases on their appointed projects. Activities associated with Para 1 to 6 of the Functional Competencies specify the minimum expected duties to be carried out at this level.

    

2. Group Role - Proactively carry out expected group and discipline duties associated with Para 7, 8 of the Functional Competencies as a minimum and support the Section Manager, Pipe Stress Analysis & Pipe Support, as required.

 

Functional Competencies:

1.      Technical Design Ability - Sound understanding of impact of various factors affecting piping design, impact of stress change on piping design; creation of critical line list; maintenance of calculation index; use of computer and approximate methods for stress analysis; co***ersant with interpretation of design codes, (B31.1/3 etc.); Interface with other disciplines; creation of datasheets and requisition including evaluation of bids, including springs and hanger

systems, bellows and hoses and confident in interpretation of design codes (B31.1/3 etc.). Confident in handling high pressure and high temperature lines and lines connecting to vibrating/rotating equipment, static equipment, fired equipment, fan coolers, pumps, re- boilers, columns etc.  Experienced in rack-piping design including loop sizing and spacing.

 

2.      Technical Expertise - An experienced member of the group and confident in productive roles. Has demonstrated successful completion of the technical abilities listed under Para 1 of the Functional Competency across a variety of project types and phases. Would have gained experience in site-based design and construction support.

 

1. Technical - Design Basis - Supports the preparation of project specifications, standards and design basis. Supports the issue of appropriate technical note to achieve technical consistency and quality of design.

    

2. Project Execution – Capable of innovative approach to achieve cost effective and optimum design resulting in practical/sensible load transfer on structures and equipment nozzles supported with sound basis and documented calculations. Carryout and ensures approval of routing and supporting of critical lines including designing of supports. Familiar with discipline interfaces and how to influence impacts to the benefit of the project. Support construction, commissioning and procurements activities and liaise with project and client team as required.

 

1. Managing Work and Performance –Works unsupervised and /or leads a small specialist team providing clear technical direction and decision making. Sets goals and targets, checks, verifies and takes corrective action as required. Uses coaching methods and a consultative style to aid others with problem solving and technical queries. Extends the role to the wider disciplines taking responsibility for the stress / supports. Leads work share effort, ensuring targets are met or exceeded.

 

1. Commercial Awareness and Customer Focus - Understands the importance of internal customers to the Group. Listens and responds to internal customers requests efficiently and takes pride in delivering a high quality service. Understands the market in which Foster Wheeler (FW) operates and is able to articulate FW’s skills to clients and methodologies to support client needs. In addition has a wider appreciation of the impact of materials and construction costs. Appreciates impact of changes to contract and raises deviations appropriately.

 

1. Continuous Improvement - Is prepared to take on new tasks. Responds positively to feedback from others. Continue professional development by attending in and out company technical trainings. Develop innovative techniques and working practices. Keep abreast of company and department developments, and of information on new technology and techniques including software tools.

 

8.      Group Support – Provides group technical support, e.g. prepare technical work practices (TWP’s), standards and technical consistency modules (TCM’s). Ensures that the results of development work and experience on other projects are fully utilised within the discipline (lessons learnt, operations alerts).  Contribute to presentations to prospective clients in support of business winning. Update own Curriculum Vitae and promotes work of the Discipline and the Group to other FW staff.

 

Responsibilities:

1.      Carrying out various pipe stress analysis and support design activities as identified in the Functional Competencies as necessary for preparation, development and issue of deliverables on their appointed project/s.

2.      Signing and checking of analysis reports, calculations, datasheets etc. in accordance with correct procedures.

3.      Ensuring engineering and design quality, technical accuracy of analysis and reports, calculations, support design etc.

4.       Execution of assigned work in accordance with applicable contract procedures and client and projects standards.

5.      Adhering to FW engineering procedures for design safety and adopting safe attitudes towards engineering design and raising features affecting the safety and integrity of the project with appropriate authorities.

6.      Correct implementation of analysis software for input and output data on their appointed project/s. 

 

Qualifications

           Qualified to degree level with 5-10 years of relevant experience or equivalent. 

 

Experience

1.      Gained sound engineering experience in the critical process plant/power industry, working in a project environment for a contracting company.

2.      Project experience of working in a variety of projects including grassroots, brown field and revamp types. 

3.      Site experience of design and construction based site assignments.

4.      Sound understanding of pipe stress analysis concepts and its application to various systems and associated codes and standards.

5.      Experienced in using analysis software systems and its concepts of handling analysis.
