A.Primary purpose of role:

1.Work with the Head of Product for Costa China to implement Costa China’s beverage strategy, to build customer and brand perceptions within China, through beverage portfolio management

2.Lead the development of local beverages which drives consumer preference and delivers competitive advantage in the China market

3.Lead the localisation of global beverages which drives consumer preference and delivers competitive advantage in China. Through continuous communication with the global product innovation team, plan the execution of gate 3 beverage innovation into the China market, once gate 3 innovation has been approved by the China Management team

4.Work with relevant teams to ensure all beverages launched meet legal, NSF and brand standards

5.Drive the beverage EPD and NPD processes from start to finish and work cross functionally to ensure all products / ingredients are launched on time and are maintained during the promotion / campaign window

6.Support the marketing team with photoshoot of beverage products for campaigns

7.Support NSF to deal with quality issues pertaining to beverage only ingredients / products

8.Deliver beverage related projects as commission by Costa China

9.Ensure relevant analysis is readily available to support the successful delivery of the beverage implementation plan

10.Share full campaign product information with the Costa Beijing team to support beverage consistency across China

11.1 direct report - manage the beverage development executive to deliver beverage objectives


Key Accountabilities:

BEVERAGE DEVELOPMENT

  1. Management of beverage development / innovation projects and range within the China market.
  2. Responsible for the development of beverages in line with Costa standards and local China market needs (EPD)
  3. Responsible for launch of new beverage concepts in line with Costa standards and local China market needs (NPD)
  4. Ensure new beverages meet the margin targets as set by the Costa China business
  5. Conduct consumer tasting sessions for new beverage products and use this data to inform final range choice
  6. Deliver competitively advantaged product solutions using R&D knows how. Test and define how to scale product solutions
  7. Work with the Costa China Category Manager to 1) optimize range across different dayparts and occasions, 2) Deliver long-term beverages pricing strategy considering cannibalization, 3) analyse beverage launch plan to ensure profitability and 4) Identify and target “underperforming” beverages, ensuring action is taken to enhance performance and delivery via weekly and monthly reviews on drink sales and sell-through
  8. Work with the Costa China Sourcing Manager and suppliers to continuously improve the quality of ingredients in beverage products
  9. Conduct beverage ingredient/product testing, to ensure product quality can be commercially benchmarked in the market by the Costa China Sourcing manager
  10. Ensure beverage SOPs are defined, meet brand standards and are operationally efficient for store teams' execution
  11. Deliver equipment required to optimize delivery in store. Define implications on store operations of new equipment
  12. Uncover deep consumer truths about beverage by ‘being in their world’ using new insight methods including ethnography, behavioral economics and neuroscience. Recover data from internal teams (marketing, finance and operations) to build better understanding of beverage needs at consumer level. Consolidate and share information with Costa teams.
  13. Ensure PCR (post campaign reviews) are held for beverage products, consolidate and share information with Costa teams.
  14. Continuously look for ways to improve the new product process to achieve everyday efficiency and better cross functional collaboration with teams.


WORK WITH GLOBAL TEAMS

  1. Leverage global innovation resources and use the innovation process for product approval when applicable
  2. Manage handover of innovation at gate 3 to the China market, ensuring integrity of agenda is maintained
  3. Commercialisation – Work with innovation team to select and build towards a successful growth model
  4. Share beverage plans with the global teams to support global campaign planning, to help define ‘what we are solving for’with beverage innovation in the China market


GENERAL

  1. Work cross functionally to ensure all beverage products are launched on time and are aligned with marketing campaign timeline and themes
  2. Optimize projects through consideration of end to end operational factors
  3. Break down cross-functional barriers regarding the delivery of beverage innovation, with finance, supply chain, sourcing, operations, marketing and Costa Global teams
  4. Work to define strategic opportunities in Beverage – identify macro growth opportunities to deliver against KPIs, use deep commercial insight to inform beverage agenda
  5. Work to define pipeline development for implementation – plan a long-list of ideas and prioritise into winning concepts that support a short and mid-term balanced portfolio of opportunities.
  6. Monitor competitor activities and market trends through review of the beverage range launched in the market

Key Performance Measures/Success Factors:

  1. Campaign products developed / localised on time for launch
  2. Margin targets achieved for new products launched
  3. Management of end to end new product process (from ideation to launch)
  4. Delivery of brand standard SOP for all beverages
  5. Find solutions for quality issues relating to beverage products / ingredients
  6. Beverage sales performance of new campaign products launched
  7. Support the delivery of % of total beverage sales

People: Build strong relationships with internal and global teams to ensure the delivery of our beverage portfolio

Required to work collaboratively and closely with cross functional teams (Costa China marketing, operations, finance, HR (training) and supply chain teams, as well as the global innovation team)

Drive the beverage related aspects of the new product process

Financial: Supporting the delivery of business targets relating to beverages

Equipment, system or process: Ability to use excel, word etc to a good level


C. Required knowledge, skills or experience

  8. Demonstrable, broad based commercial experience with understanding of how to drive profitability and market share within consumer products, services or retail environments
  9. Understanding of best practice and industry trends to drive commercial results for beverages
  10. Assess and analyse projects, product launches or competitors in market, writing analytical reports and developing strategic recommendations for beverages
  11. Good oral and written English
  12. Bachelor degree or above in relevant area (i.e. Food Science, Food Technology, Catering & Hospitality
  13. Experience of leading a beverage product development process, with a working knowledge of Quality Management Systems (QMS), beverage procurement and category management understanding
  14. 5 years’ experience in the beverage development field
  15. Experience in pipeline development – working on multiple initiatives at the same time with a clear roadmap /plan
  16. Experience of end to end innovation delivery – from concept to activation
  17. The ability to taste and determine flavour profiles to meet consumer tastes in China market

  1. Required to resolve issues and problems as they arise – particularly important for product innovation and quality support initiatives. Due to the nature of innovation the frequency of new issues and challenges is likely to be higher than in other areas – requiring a need to adapt to new challenges and resolve in the most appropriate way
  2. Delivers against the China beverages strategy, working with Head of Product for Costa China.
  3. Works with internal and external teams to creatively identify opportunities, solve problems on the go, and deliver winning innovations through collaboration with global team
