PRINCIPAL ENGINEER LOUDSPEAKER TRANSDUCER
Position Summary
This position is within HARMAN’s Professional Division, based in Shenzhen Development Center (SDC). Harman is hiring the most passionate, innovative, and driven engineers on the planet to create the next generation of professional products. The desired candidate has a demonstrated record of delivering successful products to market.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position does not have any direct or indirect reports. However, principal-level engineers are expected to exhibit strong leadership skills and mentor more junior engineers to help guide their careers and activities.
Job Responsibilities
This engineer will work in a collaborative environment to create new products for Harman Professional, primarily with our JBL Professional brand. The engineer will be responsible for specifying and developing loudspeaker transducers, from concept through production.
- Design transducers for Harman loudspeaker products.
- Oversee the building of prototype transducers in Harman’s prototype labs.
- Work closely with ODMs to expand development capabilities and ensure that designs meet Harman guidelines for quality, cost, and performance.
- Perform driver and system testing to characterize and document transducer performance, including power handling, impedance, transfer function, and frequency/polar response.
- Collaborate with global engineering teams to integrate internal Harman technology into new products.
- Modeling and analysis of complete loudspeaker assemblies, including transducers, compression drivers, horns, waveguides, and loudspeaker arrays.
- Create schedules, milestones, and BOM estimates for transducer development.
- Contribute to overall loudspeaker system design.
- Drive creative and innovative solutions to design challenges.
- Design for manufacturability and understand supplier limitations, tolerances, and costs.
- Simulate and design passive and powered loudspeaker systems to meet performance and cost requirements.
- Perform tests and supply data for marketing documentation.
- Execute and document all functional and performance tests required by Harman/JBL.
- Test and document all aspects of product and product component performance, including failure modes.
- Perform and document acoustical, mechanical, and electrical tests as needed.
- Work with various departments to implement corrective actions when needed.
- Capture all product design work in document control systems using Harman’s best practices.
- Support product launch activities with on-site support when needed.
- Leverage acoustic simulation programs to virtually design and analyze results to incorporate validate new designs and design improvements.
Basic Qualifications:
- Demonstrable success in delivering acoustic products to market.
- Bachelor’s degree in acoustics, physics, or engineering with a strong curriculum emphasis in acoustics and acoustical engineering.
- 8+ years experience in the development, validation, and tuning of transducers.
- A strong fundamental understanding of the physics of loudspeakers and transducers.
- Proficient in Matlab, COMSOL, ABEC, or related FEA simulation tools.
- Proficient with Klippel, EASERA, SMAART, or similar FFT-based acoustic analysis tools.
- Experience in DSP algorithms and programming for audio or video.
- Thorough understanding of power amplifier and power supply specifications and requirements.
- Ability to work effectively within a fast-paced, results-oriented, matrix environment.
- Self-motivated, with the ability to make good decisions and follow scientific methods.
- A strong fundamental understanding of the underlying theory and science relating to electro-acoustic modeling using both traditional matrix calculations and FEA simulations.
- Professional-level written and elementary oral English skills.
Preferred Qualifications & Desired Competencies:
- Master’s Degree in Acoustics or related discipline with acoustics emphasis.
- Fluency in written and oral English.
- Deep familiarity with component suppliers and contract manufacturers.
- Experience with quality-oriented problem solving skills (8D) and Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (DFMEA).
- Experience with DSP-based room tuning for optimal listening experience.
- Demonstrated ability to lead acoustic design teams and mentor junior and peer engineers.
- Passion for music and audio, including recording music, mixing live music, or playing a musical instrument.

Eligibility Requirements
- Willingness to travel 10% of the time.
- Willingness to work in Shenzhen, PRC.
