Purpose of Position:
The purpose of this position is to apply basic and advanced knowledge of scientific or engineering
principles, with little supervision and guidance, to the design, redesign, test, modeling and use of
various products, subassemblies and well-precedented systems.
Essential Functions:
Designs, modifies, develops, and implements electromechanical designs and assembly
fixturing for production.
Participates in the testing process through test plan development, review, execution,
and/or analysis of tests based on established specifications
Demonstrates a comprehensive, intensive, practical knowledge of a technical field and
skill in applying this knowledge to the development of new methods, approaches, or
procedures.
Provides technical leadership for global development efforts.
Actively tracks developments in the engineering technical community and incorporates
them where appropriate.
The employee and supervisor, in consultation, develop the deadlines, projects, and work
to be done. The employee generally determines the approach to be taken and the
methodology to be used. The employee keeps the supervisor informed of progress,
potentially controversial matters, or far-reaching implications. Completed work is
generally reviewed only from an overall standpoint in terms of feasibility, compatibility
with other work, or effectiveness in meeting requirements or expected results through
appropriately scheduled and executed design reviews.
Guidelines for performing the work are scarce or of limited use. The employee uses
initiative and resourcefulness in deviating from traditional methods or researching trends
and patterns to develop new methods, criteria, or proposed new policies.
The work includes varied duties requiring many different and unrelated processes and
methods such as those relating to well-established aspects of a scientific or engineering
field. The work involves establishing criteria; formulating projects; assessing program
effectiveness; or investigating or analyzing variety of unusual conditions, problems, or
questions. The work product or service affects a wide range of establishment activities,
major activities of industrial concerns, or the operation of other organizations.
Provides knowledge in the core scientific or engineering discipline to the project or
business area of focus. Provides information on strategic planning and technology
evaluation as needed.
Other Non-Essential Functions:
Mentors junior engineers.
DBS and Cross-Functionally Competent.
Personal contacts are with individuals or groups from inside and outside the employing
establishment in a moderately unstructured setting. The purpose is to plan, coordinate, or
advise on work efforts or to resolve operating problems by influencing or motivating
individuals or groups.
Education, Background and Skill Requirements
BS with a minimum of 5 to 10 years of directly relevant experience or a MS with 5
years of directly relevant experience in a product development environment
Detailed knowledge of ISO quality systems (specifically Design Controls/Product
Realization) and related requirements.
Detailed understanding of product development and manufacturing methodologies to
achieve high quality design (design for six sigma).
Strong background in design and modeling.
Excellent knowledge of tools required by project.
Demonstrated skill in the areas required to perform this job:
Mechanical design using CAD (Solidworks preferred)
Structural analysis
Design for manufacturability
Materials and component selection
Fixturing design
Technical Applications Knowledge
VOC and Product Definition
Excellent Communication and Presentation Skills
