Definition:
The Head of Assembly is responsible for the assembly of components into finished products on specific assembly lines. Assembly is defined as putting together multiple parts according to related drawings and assembly instructions. The Head of Assembly reports directly to the Operations Manager and/or the General Manager. The Head of Assembly leads a team of 10+ permanent employees.
Overall Purpose of the Role:
- Support Operations Manager responsible for the operation of an assigned area in terms of production, quality, cost, delivery, technical, safety, and human resources, whilst respecting the defined goals.
- Manage all aspects of the shift through collaborative working with the upstream and downstream added value levels, and where possible, the key performance indicators within the operation.
- Strive to continually improve using Lean tools to reduce costs, improve production and quality.
- Act independently at the organizational level. Outcomes reviewed by organizational head. Decisions and results have an impact on the function and their success. Performance affects the function’s image.
Key Responsibilities:
General and Task Management
- Lead by example, ensuring a safe, clean and efficient work place is maintained at all times.
- Achieve the required company quality standards ensuring both internal and external customer satisfaction.
- Check assemblies on quality and quantity personally and initiate corrective and preventive action if needed.
- Ensure ‘Standard Operations’ are adhered to ensure that non-conformance is challenged and counter-measures are agreed and implemented.
- Support the implementation of engineering changes, production trials, model change and pilot build.
- Contribute in the improvement of working procedures by constantly looking for solutions to ensure the best productivity and quality results.
- Ensure that internal delivery processes are adhered to support dispatch time windows.
- Supervise and control resource effectively to support customer delivery requirements and also Lean Manufacturing principles.
- Responsible for training of operators for products and processes within the local team.
- Support, comply and ensure complicity with Health & Safety regulations, the Company Handbook, Quality and Environmental standards, and all other Company policies and procedures.
- Engages interest and participation of others and has a collaborative approach to working with others.
Skills and Attributes:
- High quality sense and self-discipline.
- Adaptable to change and varying situations.
- Strong problem solving skills and able to establish logical practical solutions.
- Computer literate with good numeric skills
- Full understanding of customer expectations and deliverables with an awareness of the impact of failure/cost of poor quality
- Solid English in speaking and writing
Qualifications and Experience Levels:
- Bachelor or Master degree is not mandatory but an appropriate level of technical education is required. Engineering / technical skills or background are required.
- At least 5 years experience in assembly and shop floor management or industrial engineering. Alternatively 5 years experience in assembly quality control.
- Professional (or working towards) accreditation with an industry related body. A full understanding of the requirements of running an assembly.
- Significant work experience in a high volume manufacturing environment. Knowledge and understanding of lean techniques may be advantageous.
- Proven track record within manufacturing management or supervision or quality control.
