2. MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB:
? Responsible for the successful management of a set of journals in the China portfolio. This involves conducting and overseeing the prioritisation of journals for development and the setting and implementation of journal plans accordingly to maintain a competitive advantage and optimizing publishing service and commercial opportunities.
? Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with all Editors-in-Chief, Editorial Board members, society representatives, and other contacts located in China.
? Provide line-management for Journal Development Editors based in China.
? Liaise with internal departments to plan and implement tasks associated with publishing activities in China. The Journal Development Manager translates company and team strategy into journal development actions and provides experience and information to help shape the company strategy.
3. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
A. Journal management
? Translate company strategy into journal development actions.
? Prioritise journals for development, in line with company and team strategy. Devise and implement journal plans accordingly, amending as required.
? Review statistic reports for the journals and monitor performance to identify areas for improvement and take action as appropriate.
? Grow the journal portfolio by launching new society and proprietary titles.
? Oversee journal set up activities for journals within your group to ensure these are set up within expected timeframes.
? Assist Associate Publisher make annual budget for the journal portfolios.
B. Relationship management
? Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with Editors-in-Chief, society contacts, Editorial Board Members and other stakeholders.
? Strengthen relationship with the partner institutes and identify new opportunities.
? Build relationships with key contacts and opinion leaders within the field the journals operate in.
? Monitor and assist with relationship building throughout the team and other departments.
C. Outreach
? Represent the company at workshops, institution visits or in conference sessions and delivers successful outcomes in alignment with action plans.
? Incorporate knowledge of publishing trends and market intelligence to inform team strategy in collaboration with Associate Publisher.
D. People management
? Monitor and support Journal Development Editors working on their own journals.
? Set objectives, perform appraisals and apply disciplinary procedure where necessary.
? Identify training needs from the team.
? Manage holiday requests and sickness and ensure that journals are covered at all times.
4. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
Knowledge
? Knowledge of the journal publishing industry in China and worldwide
? Master degree or above, with a background in engineering, physics or material sciences.
? Interest in open access publishing
Qualities/Skills
? Excellent communication and quick learning skills
? Customer focused
? A positive, can-do approach to problem-solving in both daily tasks and more complex troubleshooting
? Strong administrative and organizational skills, with attention to detail
? Good time management skills and the ability to see a project through to completion
? Ability to complete allocated tasks and work to (often competing) deadlines
? Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels
? Ability to work in a team
? Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Mandarin
? Willing to travel and represent the company at external events
? A high level of computer literacy (including MS Office, Outlook and internet browsers)
Experience
? Scientific editorial/publishing experience, including contact with editors, authors and reviewers desirable
? Experience developing and maintaining productive and friendly relations/partnerships with academic and industry-based scientists
? Experience working in an international environment desirable
? Experience in people management
