Key tasks:
For the relevant defined territory / client accounts, develop and grow sales revenues to achieve financial targets across all relevant products, including but not limited to:
1. Display advertising and classified advertising in all Nature journals
2. Custom solutions (custom publishing, consulting, institutional Reprint collections etc)
3. Nature Index
4. Sponsorship (including Nature Outlooks etc)
5. Nature conferences
6. Researcher Services (including training, editing services etc.)
7. Build relationships with science-related institutions in the relevant defined territory
8. Assist Head of Institutional and Corporate Partnerships (Greater China) in; (a) developing and maintaining institutional relationships with other key universities, ministries and organisations in Greater China; (b) Monitor And identify policies, trends and funding opportunities that drive commercial and custom revenue business opportunities
9. Systematically work on large scale custom and commercial projects (eg sponsorship projects, custom publications, Nature conferences, Nature Index) from initiation through all relevant phases including the successful sale and project delivery.
10. Creatively work with existing and new clients to propose new project topics and areas that will generate revenue.
11. Work closely with project manager to ensure each project to be well delivered on time according to the contract
12. Work collaboratively with colleagues to create a culture of success, excellence and continuous development.
13. Work with relevant product managers to identify and develop new products, custom projects, consultancy opportunities and other revenue-generating opportunities.
14. Build effective relationships with all relevant internal departments such as editorial, marketing, production, and accounts.
15. Work closely and collaboratively with global business development and sales staff – Sponsorship, Display Advertising, NatureJobs, SLBU, Digital Science, Macmillan New ventures, Macmillan Education, Scientific American and any other parts of Macmillan Science and Education business development areas - to realise synergies and generate sales opportunities.
16. Attend industry events and make on-site visits to clients as required by the business.
17. Work with local and global colleagues to enhance our profile and reputation
18. Ad hoc tasks for the Head of Institutional and Corporate Partnerships (Greater China) relevant to the role’s remit.
Key relationships:
1 commercial partners / clients
2 Colleagues in the marketing and production (both print and electronic) departments
3 team members in greater China, Tokyo and London
4 sales/business development staff in other regions
Qualifications:
1 An undergraduate qualification in science or medicine (or equivalent relevant professional experience)
Skills/knowledge:
1 Strong commercial drive alongside proven experience in maximising revenue potential and business development
2 A thorough understanding of the scientific research community and its needs and aspirations
3 Ability to develop needs and value-based proposals of MSC products and solutions for clients
4 Positive ability to develop long-term professional relationships with key members of the scientific community
5 Sound knowledge and interest in science
6 Strong interpersonal and influential communication skills, with effective negotiation and presentation skills
7 Highly self-motivated, resourceful and achievement oriented
8 A creative approach to problem-solving
9 Active, supportive team player
10 Strong interpersonal skills and a customer service ethos are essential, as is attention to the detail of implementation.
11 Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in Mandarin
12 Very good written and verbal communication skills in English
Experience:
1 At least 3 years’ experience working in science publishing, business solution selling and/or science communication with strong experience in business development/sales a must
2 Experience of institutional selling and key account selling?
