PURPOSE:
The Structural Design Supervisor is responsible for leading a structural design team whose primary focus is the development of packaging (structural) design, sample testing and providing technical support to packaging projects. In addition, this individual will work out structural design solutions for manufacturing and provide technical support to suppliers as well as technical training to team members.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
Establish ongoing training programs that raise the level of experience of our technical staff. Implement and document key processes in structural development and implementation.
Responsible for job allocation for team members, review project progress and provide technical advice. Responsible for job coordination with PM and PDX DC on structural design tasks.
Effectively plan, lead a team of structural designers. Provides guidance, leadership and mentoring to motivate optimum performance levels and career development. Proactively manages performance and succession planning. Plans for long term needs, analyzing staffing levels and resource allocation in light of changing business objectives. Clearly articulates team's needs to senior management and major internal and external supporting organizations.
Responsible for conducting structural design, including design drawing, sample cutting, and fit testing.
Reviews and check files from PM or PDX DC. Monitors and allocates works of structural designers.
Accurately perform lab test, documenting reports and provide technical advice to other team members. Coordinate with other PACCESS teams on effective supplier management and communication in support of the effective implementation of PACCESS projects.
Facilitate planning production and ensure substrates are being specified correctly and used in production.
Understands and insures customers'intent and finish structures are in alignment for manufacturing with local manufactures.
Assist the implementation team in implementing finished designs with suppliers and managing first article production.
Communicate with designers and customers. Evaluate suppliers for their ability to produce the required design and troubleshoot to provide technical assistance with our suppliers to achieve customer requirement.
On site technical assistance and fit testing for suppliers.
Other duties as assigned.
SCOPE
Position requires the ability to work with a high degree of complexity due to the different business strategies and initiatives employed by a variety of global business units and customers. Problems and issues may be only vaguely defined and require application of experience, knowledge and situation to determine the best solution. Job is performed with very little direction from others. Maintains extensive and effective communications with internal and external contacts with employees at all levels. Decisions made have an impact on the profitability of the company. Must be able to handle some confidential and sensitive information.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Direct supervision to Structural Designer, Senior Structural Designer.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION:
Four year degree in printing/packaging engineering, industrial design or related field.
5 years experience in a package engineering/structural design role with at least 1 year in a supervisory or lead role providing direct leadership/mentoring to a team of designers/engineers.
Must have extensive, creative design ability and a thorough understanding of the manufacturing process and supply chain management.
Must be a designer that can handle any corrugated design challenge with speed, accuracy and manufacturing efficiency.
Demonstrated ability to train structural designers to be highly productive and accurate contributors.
Strong analysis skills and problem solving skills with a demonstrated ability to understand and simplify complex processes.
Able to build relationships between cultural lines and be a team player.
Good knowledge of packaging manufacturing process, knowledge of printing.
Strong communication and presentation skills in both English and local language with ability to deal effectively across cultural and organizational lines. Position involves interface with significant number of non-reporting team members and outside service providers.
Strong and proven interpersonal and relationship development skills. Good relationship development & maintenance skills with diverse product suppliers and all teams within PACCESS. Experience in working with managers both internal and external.
Must be capable of multi-tasking and project leadership.
Can work independently, make decisions, define expectations and accept accountability
Demonstrated strong business acumen with an understanding of the business and technology solutions in previous roles.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy is essential.
Demonstrated positive attitude, self-motivated, team player.
Must have demonstrated strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills.
Technical skills include: Advanced knowledge of structural design software: Artios CAD, CAPE, Truck Fill. Advanced knowledge of testing tools and standard: ISTA 1A, TAPPI, Good knowledge of Microsoft Office
Some domestic travel may be required.
