Carhartt的创始人Hamilton Carhartt于1855年生于纽约的Macedon Lock，并在密歇根州南部长大。1889年，Hamilton Carhartt以自己的名字命名了Carhartt公司。公司成立之初仅靠4台缝纫机及5名工人生产出了***批适合于铁路工人穿着的丹宁布工装裤，并由Hamilton Carhartt本人逐一走访各个铁路部门进行推销。靠着敏锐的洞察力及坚定的决心，Hamilton Carhartt成功地建立起了自己的品牌知名度。由于高度的舒适性及耐用性，Carhartt在20世纪初期得到了飞速发展，并在美国，加拿大及欧洲设立了超过17家工厂及3家绵厂。"From the mill to millions"成为了Carhartt的座右铭，并被贯彻到了每一样产品的生产过程之中。20世纪90年代，Carhartt开始在Hip-Hop圈流行开。传奇唱片公司Tommy Boy Records利用Carhartt的夹克帮助他们进行销售，并使其成为了当时年轻人眼中最热门的产品。
