The R&D Engineer will develop new ink and coating formulations to aggressively grow sales with innovative water based products within the packaging business for Paper & Board and flexible packaging market segment. This incumbent will provide high-level expertise in formulation, testing, scale up, and commercialization of new ink technologies. Responsibilities will include working as a leader for new product development projects, serving as the primary liaison with Manufacturing, Procurement, EH&S, Sales and Technical Services organizations, and interacting with external customers. The R&D Engineer role will lead projects, have an expert knowledge of water and solvent based flexo and gravure inks and coatings, applications, and markets, and have experience in pigmented formulation.
? Develop new ink and coating technologies according to the company technology roadmaps.
? Complete projects according to agreed upon budget and timetables utilizing Phase Gate methodology.
? Ensure that Customer, Sales, and Technical Service have all technical information needed to properly use new formulations.
? Stay current with patent and chemical literature and be able to conduct a full search and summary of technical literature related to work projects.
? Interface with Manufacturing, Sales, Procurement, and Technical Services as required to solve customer problems.
? Plan and schedule all technical activities of a project(s)
? Maintains two-way dialogue with others on work and results
? Use first-hand customer information to improve/develop products and services.
? Maintain electronic laboratory notebooks for lab test and field test results
REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires a BS or MS degree in chemistry, polymer chemistry or chemical engineering and 3+ years of experience working for an ink or coating manufacturing company specializing in producing WB, and SB products. An Associate degree in chemistry or chemical engineering with 5+ years of relevant industrial experience would also be considered. Packaging and/or lamination experience is strongly desired. Hands-on experience working with pigmented systems and applications is a must have. The candidate should have experience working in a team environment mentoring technicians, as well as supporting Sales managers and customers. Strong written and verbal communications skills as well as project management skills are required for this role.
