Responsible:
? Be accountable for directing the development of new product technologies to support the Paint Stores Group and architectural products.
? Be responsible for setting the raw materials strategy, addressing supply and quality issues, and managing raw material supply risk for 36 architectural and specialty product control labs in the US comprising over 1300 materials.
? Be responsible for defining the innovation strategy and developing technology road maps for Stores Architectural and Diversified Brands Architectural products. These roadmaps guide and determine the future product development and product launch strategies for these business units on years’ time horizon. This position is accountable for providing a steady flow of new technology, both performance driven and cost driven, to meet business goals of these divisions.
? Be responsible for the internal polymer development program and strategy for all businesses globally. This includes production of polymers annually, and responsibility for production at polymer plants in US, Canada, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, and UK. This position is responsible for selecting and qualifying production sites, providing engineering, scale-up, technical manufacturing support and quality assurance of internally manufactured polymers on a global basis. In addition, this position is responsible for new polymer development activities to meet the ongoing innovation and business needs for all operating units on a global basis.
? Be responsible for microbiology and plant hygiene programs for GSC operations. This includes setting policies and procedures for manufacturing hygiene practices for all GSC plant, auditing plant compliance, working with operations and to determine and prioritize continuous improvement programs for plant hygiene. Additionally this position is responsible for assessing and recommending product preservation strategies and formulation approaches to prevent bacterial-related recalls for all US architectural products.
? Be responsible for setting and managing the IP strategies, including patent filings, joint development and partnership agreements, and technology license agreements.
? Be accountable for setting the strategy, seeking, securing, managing, and communicating Government R&D funding contracts and programs for all technical divisions. This includes monitoring agency policies and regulations, and interacting with elected and policy officials in the US and EU to promote and build support for initiatives.
? Be responsible for the open innovation function for company, including university relationships, technology scouting with employees on the ground in US and Europe, and the operation of the technology incubator facility. This includes an on-going understanding of the technology needs for all product development groups across the divisions, and an understanding of best known methods to find and acquire unique and creative solutions from global technology sources.
? Be responsible for developing cross-division technology platforms in areas such as corrosion, wood substrate protection, encapsulation, etc that are of broad interest to multiple technical groups is developing systems to share and leverage technology platforms across product development groups globally.
? Be responsible for developing an organization of world-class technical professionals and technical management to meet on going and long term business goals of company.
Major Task:
? Ph.D. in Chemistry, Material Science or related discipline.
? In-depth understanding of materials development, manufacturing, and commercialization processes for new product innovations.
? Coordinates project councils to set priorities and review progress of materials & formulation technology projects
? Responsible for identification of strategic technology trends and focus areas for technology development and future products.
? Develops overall technology strategy for platform research for all SHW technical divisions and operating budget requirements for technology development organization.
? Leads definition, alignment, communication, and implementation of internal polymer development and supply strategy for all divisions of company on a global basis.
? Coordinates joint development activities and other projects with outside Raw Material Suppliers, Universities, Technical Organizations, and Contract Research firms.
? Sets, reviews, and guides IP strategy.
? Determines strategy for external partnerships including government funding, technology development, and university relations. Recommends funding of external projects.
? Continually sources and valuates new business opportunities.
? Explores and implements novel approaches to current product development problems.
? Oversees and coordinates manufacturing hygiene technology processes and practices be used in Plants.
? Provides technical assessments for use by Company executives.
? Identifies and champions continuous improvement opportunities for the technical organization.
? Trains, develops, and appraises Managers within the Department
? Ensures implemented processes are ISO-9000 compatible.
