Qualifications:
Essential: Bachelor degree in Library or Information Sciences or related disciplines; Excellent communications and interpersonal skills; Organization and administration skills; Excellent user of information tools including Microsoft Office, wiki, blog and etc.; Experience in delivering customer service; Experience in training users; Experience in using online information resources; Fluency in oral and written English; Positive approach to customer care; Committed team member; Ability to prioritise work under pressure; Ability to work on own initiative; Flexible approach to working; Ability to work accurately and pay attention to detail.
Desirable: Master degree in Library or Information Sciences or related disciplines; Knowledge and awareness of recent developments in the field of education; Project management skills; Knowledge and understanding of academic library and information services within a large research-led university; Experience of planning and delivering information skills programmes; Good oral Chinese (Mandarin) language skills, if not the first language.
Salary & Benefits: RMB73, 000 – RMB116, 000 per annum before deductions, depending on qualifications and experience.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
1. To liaise with academic staff and students across the School in order to match information needs with available resources, and to publicise new resources and services offered by Information Services:
- through formal channels with departmental library liaison representatives, School Library User Groups, Staff Student Consultative Committees and departmental meetings, and informally with all members of the School;
- by initiating contact with new academic staff;
- by alerting the School to new resources or developments within Information Services;
- by responding to new course developments;
- by promoting and publicising VLE and portal services.
2. To initiate, design, promote, deliver and evaluate Information Skills teaching programmes to programmes to academic staff and students to ensure that they have appropriate information-handling skills to exploit the wide range of information resources available, employing a variety of methods and technologies:
- to provide hands-on training to reinforce theoretical teaching on an individual basis and through delivering workshops to groups;
- to contribute to assessed modules to show the relevance of resources to the academic curriculum;
- to create material for inclusion in WebCT to support online and distance learning;
- to encourage the integration of information skills into Schools’ programmes to ensure their timely and effective delivery.
3. To act as a consultant in specialist academic library resources to answer a wide range of complex enquiries and provide advice on the efficient and effective use of information, including current awareness mechanisms to support the research, teaching and practitioner needs of the School and other library users:
- to acquire and maintain expertise in the application of complex information resources to solve a variety of problems in order to retrieve required information and to advise others in search techniques;
- to maintain an awareness of information resources and new developments relating to the subject areas of interest to the School;
- to update knowledge of rapidly changing information resources and delivery modes;
- to respond to enquiries received in person, by telephone or email;
- to assist users at the point of need to exploit the wide range of available printed and electronic resources;
- to trouble-shoot difficulties that users encounter when exploiting electronic resources.
4. To manage the book, periodical and binding budgets via the Aleph Library Management System to ensure that spending reflects current and future teaching and research needs of the School as accurately possible. (Purchases above a price threshold of RMB2500 will need to be authorised by the Head of School):
- to bid for additional funding, from both internal and external sources.
5. To acquire and maintain subject knowledge and understanding of the research and teaching information needs of the School and other library users. To enable the development of a current and effective collection of information resources available to support these needs:
- to evaluate, select and manage printed and electronic resources to support the teaching and research needs of the School;
- to promote printed and electronic resources and provide guidance in their use, through the design and creation of publicity materials including information leaflets and guides to electronic resources;
- to monitor the use and suitability of existing resources through collection management techniques and statistical information;
- to manage the collection in accordance with the Relegation policy.
6. To provide support and documentation for academic staff involved in QAA, the Research Assessment Exercise, and professional accreditation visits;
7. To contribute to the development of Information Services strategy and the Connected Campus by contributing to project proposals:
- to liaise with colleagues throughout IS, and particularly with School/Faculty leaders and other School Librarians, to maintain awareness of potential developments and plan for their implementation;
- to manage and/or participate in Divisional and Connected Campus projects.
8. To contribute to the day-to-day running of subject services in the library to ensure that a reliable service is maintained by:
- Managing rotas;
- Designing and delivering staff training programmes in aspects of subject work to enhance staff performance and to enable staff to deliver a quality service - this includes induction training for new staff and refresher sessions for existing staff;
- Deputising for the Team Leader in their absence to ensure the smooth running of the Library;
- Being involved in recruitment and contributing to the Performance Review process.
9. Any other duties appropriate to the grade and role of the person appointed.
