Job Output:
? Under the supervision of the Plant Manager, this position will manage the deployment of lean activities and tools for Armstrong World Industries’ ceiling plant in Wujiang. The Lean Champion will have the responsibility of creating and leading plant efforts that identify lean improvement opportunities, conducting Kaizen events and waste reduction projects and establishing and guiding the location’s management processes for improvement.
? At the beginning of the assignment, this position will play a key role in the start-up of the new plant. The Lean Champion will be expected to support the start-up effort by ensuring the effective use of Lean concepts for all start-up activities: (i) Lean principles are designed into the engineering effort via TPM and EEM (ii) work areas are designed with the proper application of visual factory and 5S techniques (iii) standard work is developed for key operator procedures and test methods (iv) conduct appropriate lean training as part of the personnel on-boarding process (v) SQDC and MDI boards are deployed as a performance tracking mechanism for employees (vi) Proper auditing activities are implemented to maintain high level of compliance to established systems.
Key Process (Ownership/Participation):
? Develop the Lean roadmap which ensures the plant starts up with Lean ingrained into its processes. Coordinate with all project team members on the facility design, installation and commissioning.
? Co – lead the Lean Steering Committee with the Plant Manager in identifying activities, values, select Kaizen events and ensure proper resourcing and preparation for those events.
? Link lean activities to the business objectives and developing a site transformation plan in collaboration with the site management team.
? Develop and maintain detailed process maps, metrics, and control plans for the key manufacturing processes.
? Manage a Kaizen Promotion Office (KPO) to perform pre-event training, prepare the plant for events, develop and implement a communication plan, conduct post event follow-up and auditing of results, assure prompt delivery of required supplies and materials, and mentor KPO team members.
? Build and maintain the foundation for continuous for continuous improvement by ensuring the effective functioning of transformation activities aligned to a Lean Operating System.
? Teach Lean tools to all levels of the organization (Kaizen, 5S, TPM, EEM, Set-up reduction, Standard Work, Visual Management, SQDC boards, MDI, etc.)
? Assume the role of consultant, participant, and /or lead on Kaizen events.
? Foster a culture of moving forward in a change environment and continuously assuring buy-in and ownership at all levels.
? Act as the plant’s internal 5S calibration expert.
? Maintain overall program tracking for impact and cultural improvements.
? Coordinate with other Armstrong locations for benchmarking and training.
? Will support non-manufacturing lean activities in the future

? Vitality of continuous improvement project pipeline.
? Accuracy of Value-Stream Maps
Education & Work Experience:
? Bachelor’s Degree required with a technical major such as engineering, chemistry or mathematics
? Minimum 5 years manufacturing experience in a multi-national environment.
? Minimum 3 years experience in Lean and including participation in at least one successful transformation experience wherein Lean was used as part of the catalyst and foundation for the change.
? Strong leadership and meeting management skills including facilitation of Kaizen or rapid improvement events.
? Experience in change management techniques
? Basic statistical and data analysis skills.
? Computer proficiency in, Excel, Word, Power Point
Specialized Knowledge & Skills:
? Lean certification desired
? Green Belt Certification desired.
? Strong communication skills, including written and oral; able to work with both management and shop-floor teams equally effectively.
? Influence and persuasive power to facilitate team to change behavior and follow process etc.
? Leadership and project management skills are desired to organize key initiatives for effective execution and results.
? Basic English language skills in reading, writing, good spoken English is desirable.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
? Occasional travel for plant visits or training
? Occasional out of the ordinary work hours
? Frequent activities in plant workshop environment
? Work environment that may be dusty, wet and noisy. High or low ambient temperatures at times.
